Have you read Locke and Key before? If not, I HAVE TO TALK TO YOU when you're done. Loved that series! To me, Joe Hill is the perfect case study of Nature vs. Nurture. How much of that talent came from the womb, how much from having two professional writers as parents?
You should put Nightmare At 20,000 Feet: Horror Stories By Richard Matheson on there as an October monthly read.I could do the Locke & Key. I've read the first 4, but thinking about re-reading them now that I have 5 and 6.

Oooh, yes. I love Matheson. :D
Just pushing the FoF reads. Hehe. Also, Sabriel could qualify, kinda. I was wanting to read that whole series, as the new one is coming out in October.
I also always do horror in October so I'm also down. I've got my IT audiobook downloaded and ready for action.
Dewey's 24 hour read a long... I'm kind of afraid to ask. Lol. I'm in bed by 9 most nights, so... that's a no. At the Mountains of Madness is one of my favorite shorts and my favorite Lovecraft, so I would definitely be up for reading that. Not at midnight... But on the weekend of the 18th.
I'm going thru a phase of wanting to reread favorite books. The ones that would fit here are, It, The Stand, and maybe The Talisman. I would also be up for reading The Haunting of Hill House.
I'm going to reread the old Anne Rice books too at some point, but I'm really not in a hurry. I have a feeling they will become 'what was I thinking?' books. But if anyone else wants to read them, I will. Misery loves company... :)

I can't do it, I'm gonna leave Rice in my past where she belongs. But I wish you luck!!
The only book I'm willing to reread by her is Servant of the Bones - it has the least amount of squickiness for me.
Of course I'm totally down for people reading along with me for what I'm reading, but I really just intended for this to be a general thread for people to post what they are reading in Horror-tober (or whatever version you choose to do) LOL. I want to see what you guys are reading too - don't just feel like you have to jump in for what I listed!
I have been thinking about reading the Richard Matheson group read and one of Joe Hill's books for the month of October. Anyone have a suggestion for Joe Hill?I have a lot of other, non-horror books out at the moment. Oh well--such as the life of a bibliophile.

Well... it KINDA is... sorta. A little? Should I move it to Randomnessosity? LOL

Another one is Throttle, a collaboration with his Da. It's a short story, but I mention it here because it is a sequel to one of the Matheson stories, "Duel".
Thanks for the feedback, all! Becky, Horns sounds awesome. Has anyone read Heart-Shaped Box or N0S4A2 (apologies if I wrote the title wrong)? The library where I work has both, and I'm curious.
I've also always been a fan of Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, if we're still looking for scary books.

Yup, I've read all of his novels. NOS4A2 is more Xmasy, but HSB would be good too, but I like Horns better.
I've read HSB and NoS4A2. I think Horns is my favorite of the three? I like them all though.Didn't know there was a movie coming out though.. I'll have to make it a point to see it!

Here's what I put on hold for my October reading. Hopefully it'll all get in on time:The Vanishing by Wendy Webb
In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters
Murder as a Fine Art by David Morrell
Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel
The Resurrectionist: The Lost Work of Dr. Spencer Black by E.B. Hudspeth
The Woman in Black by Susan HillAsylum by Madeleine Roux
The Edinburgh Dead by Brian Ruckley
The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier

Since some of these are MG or YA, and might be quick reads, I may add a few more.
For my past birthday I pooled my gift cards together and bought the Guillermo Del Toro classic horror collection from penguin. I'd been eyeing them, but couldn't really justify buying them. So I think I'll challenge myself to read them for the month of October.
The Haunting of Hill House, Frankenstein, The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories, The Raven, American Supernatural Tales, and Haunted Castles.
Plus, At the Mountains of Madness and Other Tales of Terror, if it isn't in The Thing on the Doorstep, and It or The Stand. Though, probably not both, if someone else wants to read either I'll read that one. Otherwise, I'll pick one for next month and the other later.
This sounds fun, I might start early.
I was thinking about reading The Stand... It's been a while since I read it, and I want to read the "original" edited version, which I've never read. So if you want to do that one, I'll slip it in somewhere. :)

I would be more than happy to read The Stand with whoever wants to read it. :)I haven't read it since high school, which was... awhile ago.
Currently 40% through The Troop, I'm a massive King fan and he admitted this creeped even him out. I can see why so far, very graphic and in a situation you could put yourself in.
I've finished Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, and loved it pretty much as I expected to. Now I have started The Girl with All the Gifts, and I really like it so far.
What's everyone else reading for Horrortober?
I actually almost started a Jonathan Maberry audiobook: The Dragon Factory, but went with The Martian instead. Probably do the Maberry next.

Got through 19% of it today. And I must say, though it's not classified as horror, I'd venture that it's scarier than many things that are.
I'm almost finished with The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror, 2014 Edition and Lovecraft's Monsters. Next up, probably Horns and New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird.
Nan wrote: "I'm almost finished with The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror, 2014 Edition and Lovecraft's Monsters. Next up, probably Horns and [book:New Cthulhu: ..."I read the 2013 edition last year. Had some good stuff in there.
I don't know why, but I'm really on a short story kick lately, have been enjoying a bunch of anthologies.
I finished The Haunting of Hill House. I liked it. There were some freaky moments. But, it's a rare case where, I actually like the movie better. The Haunting - the original - that is.Now I'm reading Poe's, The Raven, but I'm not feeling his stories, yet. Maybe I'm just not in the mood to think about what I'm reading. I just want to read.
Felina wrote: "I finished Old Man's War and started on Asylum. It's pretty good so far."Starting before me, huh?

Of course. It's always a timing issue when I read books with you.

I will be putting together the list of books I want to read in October, and if you want to participate, feel free to do the same. They don't necessarily need to scare you - they can be anything you feel is appropriately spooky for your October reading. UF with vampires or werewolves or zombies, PNR, mysteries, ghost stories, straight up horror... whatever ya want!
If you don't want to commit to a full month of horror, that's cool too, just post here if you read anything that would fit - or jump in and discuss, or just cheer me (us!) on.
Anyone in the mood for some creepiness? (I mean from the books, not me. :P)
