I have also read One Day Of Ivan Denis few years back. I am not aware it take place in Kazakstan, I was sure it is Syberia.
I just looked it up and the place the author was imprisoned was near Kok-Terek in southeastern Kazakhstan. They had camps in lots of places that weren't Siberia. I read the Gulag Archipelago, and the camp he was at was bad, but not as bad as some others. I don't know how he survived so long.
Yap, we as 19-olds were in army that was previously stable for Maria Theresia, Habsburg empress with no hot water. Only once a week for several minutes. It was dreadful, with bad food, stealing from comrades, especially socks during winter and other things from "common men". It was million times better then any such camp. From December to April we had no hot water, but finally there waere works in toilets so we got taps. In space of several days all the valves were gone. Only one tap was working but you had to use special screw.?! People?!
Not too hard, but stupid and silly from time to time. There is popular song over here "It is all easy when you are young". It was normal for everybody. At the same time, there was war in neighboring Bosnia, we were just shooting targets, but there it must have been awful. Yesterday friends and neighbors, today killing each other with some notion that they are the enemy. Some unit of Bosnian Serb army came in southern Serbia to have military drill with us. It was awful, boys even younger of us, but full of themselves. Putting weapons in arms of juvenile is terible. Only worse is African kids with guns. Stay safe, sorry to bother you
You aren't bothering me. I like to learn what life is/was like in other countries.Have you read the book The Bridge on the Drina? It's good.
It is mandatory in our schools, or it was. Nowdays the children don‚t read except SMS and similar. There is movie about war in Bosnia "Pretty Villages Burn Pretty Well". As my uncle is camerman, he brought back home short book about the filming of it, written by producer female. She talked to locals during filming at Vishegrad, where The Bridge is about war. Most on front-line had respect to fighters on the other side. Going away from front-line, she noticed, aggravatioon against hated enemies, to extend that many civilians wanted guns to kill them, but plain soldiers just wanted to end it and go home.
Yes, my grandmother was from Vukowar. Her family was here at our home for nearly a year and then to Canada, Vancouver. The parents tried to stay to "guard" the house during fighting. They were luckyto escape with heads only. Grandmother was in terrible state WWII and WWI memories came flooded back.
