After hearing the very sad news about the death of Deborah Devonshire earlier this week I immediately sought out my unread copy of her memoirs...I haven't been disappointed.

Early chapters recount familiar stories of the Mitford childhood but seen through different eyes. Farve in particular is coming alive and you can tell how much she thought of him in how attuned she was to his views. She explained very succinctly about his view on the hereditary peerage which was abolished in 1999. I was tickled by Debo's aside about Tony Blair "...a stranger to common sense, he preferred the grand gesture and the big spin."

Pink I read this last year and enjoyed it very much. It added to what I'd already learnt about the Mitford childhood in The Sisters: The Saga of the Mitford Family and added lots of interesting stories about her later life. I also have All in One Basket on my shelf and might try that one soon.

Oops...I see what I did... Because I set it up on my mobile phone it has gone into the 'general' section. I'll get myself to a computer tomorrow and fix it!
