It's looking like we'll be reading Great Expectations for the next read, unless something changes over the next two days :) Looking forward to reading my first Dickens!

Haven't started this yet as I am trying to finish up the Beautiful and Damned before I start any more books. I'm going to be reading from the drop cap edition when I do start (hopefully in the next week or so). What editions is everyone else reading from? Is this your first Dickens? Any advice from Dickens veterans?

Personally, I regard 'Great Expectations' as Dickens' masterpiece. It is beautifully written, has a very complete storyline (Dickens is often known for his many scattered subplots and loose threads), and is a brilliant character study. It holds some of the best, most wonderfully absurd characters ever. Miss Havisham is iconic.

My advice would be not to be too concerned with the main character Pip. Many people find him too shallow and self involved to be a great character, but liking him isn't really essential for the plot. It is more interesting to consider his journey, his character development than his character itself. If that makes any sense at all?

'Great Expectations' is one of my favorite books of all-time. I reread it every year and I'll be trying to reread it this month as well – hopefully I will have time for it :)
