I don't remember much about the plot. I read it probably around 2010 (though could be off) and it was probably newly published. I picked it up from the book store because the cover caught my eye. It is about an orphan girl and the story starts in an orphanage in London. Much of the story is set underground, part of it literally abandoned tunnels of the London Underground. I think the tunnels were connected to Hell. The devil/Lucifer played a part and I think there were Angels like Gabriel also. The main character had some sort of mentor called Wittgenstein (like the philosopher). Or maybe Wittgenstein was one of the other characters..? Sorry for being so vague. The cover was dark blue with a full moon and had the Big Ben on it I think. I feel like the title was a made-up word but, again, not entirely sure.

Found this one: " Neverwhere" by Neil Gaiman. He is working on a sequel to it. Cover sort of matches your description. It's blue and has Big Ben, but I don't see a moon. There seems to be different covers, though.https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
It's been a while since I read it, but it sure sounds a lot like Neverwhere.
It might be this one: Un Lun Dun :) Your description sounds a bit like a mix of Neverwhere and this one.
It's not Neverwhere, the story was definitely more childish. It might have been more middle-grade than YA. It is also not Un Lun Dun. Thanks for the suggestions though!I think part of the revelations at the end (spoilers ahead!) were around the fact that all big cities in the world had an underground counterpart with demons and such. Something about a "necessary evil". Also possibly the main character was some sort of "chosen one". I remember London Underground stations like Whitechapel and Blackfriars were mentioned and were possibly important locations.
Sorry, I just remembered I read this book in Dutch rather than English. Searched in Dutch and I found it (original is in German)
