What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Hi! I read this chaptered book in my school's library in Singapore when I was 11 or 12 (I mention the Singapore part because they may have been a book published only in the UK). The cover had lots of dark blues and blacks.

It's about a young boy who goes on some sort of journey with a talking stallion as his companion. I vaguely also remember runes, bones, nightmares, and dark caves. The boy meditates at some point and wakes up in a sweat after a terrifying vision.
After visiting someone, they're joined by a talking mare as well.

I've been searching for years, so I'm really hoping someone can help me. I unfortunately don't remember the title, the author, or the main character's name :(

It's not The Horse and His Boy, is it? It's sort of an obvious answer (so probably not what you're looking for), but it is a YA/children's book with a boy & a talking horse!

Nope! It's not that one, and it doesn't seem to be any from Goodread's list of Fantasy Books with Talking Horses (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/5...)

I finally found the book! It's "The Riddle and the Rune" by Grace Chetwin. Thanks everyone for the help (lol has it really been like almost 4 years)
