Aʟᴇʀɪᴏɴ
The Alerion is a bird like an eagle; it is lord over all other birds. It is the color of fire, is larger than an eagle, and its wings are as sharp as a razor.
Aᴍᴘʜɪsʙᴀᴇɴᴀ
The Amphisbaena is a two-headed lizard or serpent. It has one head in the normal position, and another at the end of its tail. It can therefore run in either direction. Its eyes shine like lamps, and has no fear of cold.
Aɴᴛ-ʟɪᴏɴ
Also called the Myrmecoleon. The ant-lion is so called because it is the "lion of ants," a large ant or small animal that hides in the dust and kills ants. It has the face of a lion and and the body of an ant, with each part having its appropriate nature.

Bᴀʀɴᴀᴄʟᴇ Gᴏᴏsᴇ
Barnacle Geese come from trees that grow over water. These trees produce birds that look like small geese; the young birds hang from their beaks from the trees. When the birds are mature enough, they fall from the trees; any that fall into the water float and are safe, but those that fall on land die. Their barnacles are used as aphrodisiacs.
Bᴀsɪʟɪsᴋ
The Basilisk is usually described as a crested snake. It is called the king (regulus) of the serpents because its Greek name basiliscus means "little king"; its odor is said to kill snakes. Fire coming from the basilisk's mouth kills birds, and its glance will kill a man. It can kill by hissing, which is why it is also called the Sibilus. Like the scorpion it likes dry places; its bite causes the victim to become hydrophobic. Only the weasel can kill a Basilisk.
Bᴏɴɴᴀᴄᴏɴ
The Bonnacon is a beast with a head like a bull, but with horns that curl in towards each other. Because these horns are useless for defense, the Bonnacon has another weapon. When pursued, the beast expels its dung which travels a great distance (as much as two acres), and burns anything it touches.

Cᴀʟᴀᴅʀɪᴜs
The Caladrius is an all-white bird that lives in the king's house. If it looks into the face of a sick man, it means that he will live, but if the Caladrius looks away, the sick man will die of his illness. To cure the sick man, the Caladrius looks at him, and drawing the sickness into itself.
Cᴀᴛᴏʙʟᴇᴘᴀs
The Catoblepas is a four-legged bull-like creature with a very large and heavy head. Because of the weight of its head it can only look down (catoblepas is Greek for "that which looks downward). It has a long mane that hangs over its eyes, which are red and bloodshot. If the beast were ever to look up it would be deadly, because anyone who looks into its eyes will die immediately. It also has a foul and dangerous breath from eating poisonous plants.
Cᴇʀᴀsᴛᴇs
The Cerastes is the most flexible of all serpents, so flexible that is seems to have no spine. It has either two horns, which are like a ram's horns, or four pairs of small horns. The Cerastes hides in the sand so that only its horns show; animals, thinking the horns are food, come close and are killed by the serpent.
Cᴇʀʙᴇʀᴇ
A three-headed hound that is often used as a guard dog. Very fierce and has ties to the Orthros species.
Cɪɴɴᴀᴍᴏʟᴏɢᴜs
The cinnamalogus is a bird that lives in Arabia. It builds its nest using the fruit of the cinnamon tree, which men value greatly. The men who want the cinnamon cannot climb the tree to reach the nest, because the nest is too high and the tree branches too delicate, so they throw lead balls to knock down the cinnamon. Cinnamon obtained from the nest of this bird is the most valuable of all.

Dɪᴘsᴀ
A snake so small it is not seen before it is stepped on, and so poisonous anyone it bites dies before he feels the bite.
Dʀᴀɢᴏɴ
The greatest of all serpents on earth. Dragons are divided into two types: Eastern Dragons and Western Dragons. Western Dragons each breath a different element: fire, electricity, poison gas, and so forth. Eastern Dragons do not breath anything, but make up for it with their use of magic.

Eᴄʜᴇɴᴇɪs
The Echeneis is a fish, half a foot in length, that clings to ships and delays their passage. When this fish attaches to a ship, even in the high winds of a storm the ship will not move, but seems to be rooted in the sea. The Echeneis is found in the Indian Sea.

Gʀɪғғɪɴ
The griffin is a winged, four-footed animal. It has the body of a lion, but the wings and head of an eagle. It is born in the Hyperborean mountains, or perhaps in Ethiopia; some say it lives in the Indian desert, which it leaves only to find food. Griffins are the enemy of the horse. A griffin will tear a man to pieces or carry him to its nest to feed its young. Griffins are strong enough to carry away an entire live ox. They are also known for digging gold from mines.

Hʏᴅʀᴜs
The Hydrus is an animal that lives in the Nile River. It is the enemy of the crocodile. When it sees a crocodile sleeping with its mouth open, the Hydrus first rolls in mud to make itself slippery, then enters the crocodile's mouth and is swallowed. It then eats its way out of the crocodile's belly, killing it.

Iᴄʜɴᴇᴜᴍᴏɴ
The Ichneumon is the enemy of the dragon. When it sees a dragon, the Ichneuman covers itself with mud, and closing its nostrils with its tail, attacks and kills the dragon. Some say it is also the enemy of the crocodile and the asp, and attacks them in the same way. This may be a confusion with the Hydrus, which has these same habits. It's appearance is a cross between a mongoose and an otter.

Lᴀᴍɪᴀ
Possessing the upper body of a human, the lower body of a lion, and the fangs of a snake, the Lamia is a fierce predator. With the gift of Foresight, they are wise as well as manipulative. Lamias feed on human infants and are fierce enemies of Sphinxes
Lᴇᴏɴᴛᴏᴘʜᴏɴᴇ
The Leontophone is a small animal that is deadly to lions. To kill a lion, the flesh of a Leontophone is burned and its ashes are sprinkled on meat, which is placed at a crossroad; if a lion eats only a small amount it dies. Lions hate Leontophones and hunt and kill them, tearing them apart with their claws rather than biting them.
Leucrota
Also called the Crocotta, the Leucrota is a swift beast that lives in India. It is a composite animal, the result of a mating between a hyena and a lioness, the same size as an ass. It has an extremely wide mouth, that stretches from one ear to the other. It does not have individual teeth, but only a single bone where teeth should be. Like the hyena, the Leucrota can make sounds that resemble human speech. This beast eats human corpses and can change sex.

Mᴀɴᴅʀᴀᴋᴇ
Sometimes called the Mandragora, the Mandrake is a plant; its roots grow in human form, male and female, and shriek when torn from the ground. It is of great use in medicine, but anyone who hears the plant's cry dies or goes mad. The human shape of the Mandrake root has probably helped to foster, if it did not originate, the weird notion that the plant springs from the drippings of a man hanged on a gallows. Hence in Germany the plant bears the popular name of the Little Gallows Man. It is, or used to be, believed in that country that when a hereditary thief, born of a family of thieves, or one whose mother stole while he was in her womb, is hanged on a gallows, and his seed or urine falls on the ground, the Mandrake or Little Gallows Man sprouts on the spot. The Mandrake counters the effects of Cockatrice, Basilisk and Gorgon venom and grants sterile women fertility.
Mᴀɴᴛɪᴄᴏʀᴇ
The Manticore is a composite beast from India, with a blood-colored lion's body, the face of a man with blue eyes, and a tail resembling the sting of a scorpion. It can leap great distances and is very active. It eats human flesh. Its voice is a whistle that sounds like a melody from pipes. Some say it can shoot spines from its tail. It has three rows of teeth.
Mᴜsᴄᴀʟɪᴇᴛ
This animal is said to have a body like a hare (though smaller), legs and tail like a squirrel, ears like a weasel, a muzzle like a mole, hair like a pig and teeth like a boar. It climbs trees and jumps from branch to branch by the strength of its tail. When it climbs a tree it devastates the leaves and fruit. It makes its nest in a hollow underground below the tree; its nature is so hot that it causes the tree to dry up and die.

Oʀᴘʜᴀɴ Bɪʀᴅ
It has a crest, its neck and chest are like those of a peacock, it has the beak of an eagle, the feet of a swan, and the body of a crane. Its wings are red, white and black. It lays its eggs on the water, and as soon as it does, the chick grows inside the shell. The mother can tell which eggs hold the best chicks: the good eggs float a little below the mother, while the bad ones sink to the sand at the bottom of the sea. When it is time for the eggs to hatch, the good ones rise up under the mother's wings, where the chick come joyfully forth and are led to their father. The bad eggs hatch where they are, at the bottom of the sea, and the young birds must live there in darkness and grief.

Sᴀᴡғɪsʜ
The Sawfish is a sea monster with enormous wings. When it sees a ship, it raises its wings so it can race against the ship. The Sawfish tires after thirty or forty stadia and dives back into the water to devour fish. When it raises its wings they hold back the wind from ships; sailers do not like the Sawfish because it causes ships to sink. This beast is also said to have a serrated crest that it uses to cut into ships.
Sᴄɪᴛᴀʟɪs
The Scitalis is a serpent with such marvelous markings on its back that its appearance stuns the viewer, slowing the person down so that they are caught. Its heat is so great that it sheds its skin even in the winter.
Sᴇᴘs
The Seps is a small snake. Its poison is deadly, consuming both the body and the bones of those the Seps bites. It's corrosive venom is very valuable.
Sᴘʜɪɴx
"The Strangler" in Greek, there are many types of Sphinxes. The ram-headed Criosphinx, the hawk-headed Hieracosphinx, the male-headed Androsphinx and female-headed Gynosphinx. Uɴɪᴄᴏʀɴ
It has a single horn in the middle of its head; the horn is usually depicted as straight and long, and often with a spiral groove running up it. The Unicorn is fierce, strong and swift, and no hunter can catch it. To tame the beast so it can be captured, a virgin girl is placed in its path. The Unicorn, seeing the maiden, comes to her and puts its head in her lap and falls asleep. The hunters can then easily capture or kill it. Some accounts say the girl must bare her breast and allow the Unicorn to suckle. The Unicorn is the enemy of the elephant, it is also the enemy of Dragons and lions. A Unicorn's horn, called an Alicorn, is highly valued. It can be used to detect poison, and if dipped in a poisoned drink, the horn causes the poison to be rendered harmless. Powdered Unicorn horn is used as an aphrodisiac.

The Yale has very long and flexible horns, which it move independently in any direction. When it fights, it keeps one horn pointed backward, so that if the horn it is fighting with is damaged it can bring the other to the front. The Yale is the size of a horse, but has the tail of an elephant and the jaws of a boar, and is black. The Basilisk is the enemy of the Yale, and if it finds the Yale asleep it stings it between the eyes, causing its eyes to swell until they burst.
