أعتقد ان هناك بعض الإختلاف في المعنى

أليست هذه المقولة شطرا من بيت شعر؟

يا خادم الجسم كم تسعى لخدمته
أتطلب الربح فيما فيه خسران

أقبل على النفس وإستكمل فضائلها
فأنت بالنفس لا بالجسم إنسان

نعم ولكنها تحمل نفس المعنى

وهذه أيضا أجدها غريبة بعض الشيء لنقضها ملكية الروح

كما أنها تختلف عن معنى البيت

الشطر الثاني من البيت يبين أن إنسانية الإنسان هي في قيمة الروح التي يمتلكها وليس في قيمة الجسد

في البيت الذي يسبقه يقول الشاعر

يا خادم الجسم كم تفنى بخدمته

وفيه يقصد أن المرء يعتني بجسده أكثر من عنايته بروحه

so how can we translate it into Arabic?

the origin qoute is contradictious , so how can we translate it into Arabic without this contradiction.

I see that there's an advantage of such a contradiction ,which probably appears in the beginning af a text ,that is it draws our attention to read and read till the end.

As for the meaning of the above qoute
I see that it's not away from the meaning of the Arabic verse:"فأنت بالروح لابالجسم انسان
it carrys the same meaning but in another way

when he say : you don't have a soul
that because he is a soul
a soul in a body
not a body of a soul
and this means إنسانية الإنسان هي في قيمة الروح التي يمتلكها وليس في قيمة الجسد
as u explain the Arabic verse

by the way, just wanna to add that this Arabic verse became an independant proverb so we are not concern of what the poet wants to convey

you said “how can we translate it into Arabic without this contradiction”…well, sometimes you can’t!

especially if the writer is as famous as C.S Lewis….it’s his personal opinion and no one should play with it. You can agree or disagree with his concepts, but when you translate to another language then you have to translate the meanings he presents and not the meanings you desire.

The Arabic poet is talking about humanity. He is saying that the soul we have is what makes us human while C.S. Lewis is playing on the meanings of “have” vs “are”. In other words, if we can rephrase Lewis’s statement we would say “you are a soul that possess a body”. As you can see the main ideas are different; one talks about humanity while the other is defining the human soul, and I don’t think it’s wise to force Lewis’ quote and the Arabic quote together and claim that they mean the same exact thing.

لم أفهم

ما هو ركن الجنى؟

أنت لا تملك روحا بل أنت روح تملك جسدا
هي ترجمة لقول لويس
وليست مرادفة لبيت الشعر بالعربية

كما أن حتى هذه الترجمة لا ترفع التناقض من قول لويس
لا زال هناك تناقض
فكيف يكون المرء روحا ولكنه لا يملكها؟
ولكن كما قلت هذا رأيه الخاص ولا يصح أن نغيره

نحن نترجم قولاً له فلابد أن نعنى برأيه الخاص
