I'll start the ball rolling with these two (and yes, I do plan to post some of my novel links!!).

Stepbrother Dearest

Moira: Abduction to Akrasia

Please feel free to paste this:

Here's my "Page Review" of Stepbrother Dearest:

1) Cover **

2) Description ****

3) Story Idea ***

4) Title ****

5) Comments: I found the idea interesting, and the cover far too generic to be very appealing; also, the colors are dull and the text is mediocre if not worse. On the other hand, this book is selling like discounted shortening in Walmart, so...? But is the cover helping or hindering or indifferent? I have no clue at this point.

Cover - 4*
Description - 5*
Story Idea - 3*
Book Title - 3*
Comments - I actually like the cover but I think the text needs changing the colour just doesn't seem to go. The descripton isn't long winded, it's to the point and makes me want to know more about Elec.

I find the description rather confusing (I can follow it, but only because I've read the novel). The cover doesn't work at all, imo, mostly because of the dark colors and lack of contrast, so you can't clearly see the two lovers.

I find it interesting, and sort of disturbing, that four of the bestselling romance novels feature guys with their shirts off. Not that I have anything against shirtless guys - it even makes sense with the "RUINED" series, since the dude probably lost his shirt! - but wow...are people not a little put off by the incredible generic derivativeness of shirtless (and often headless) guys just standing there? It shows me that artistic creativity plays a fairly minor role in a book's appeal. ?

5) Comments: The cover is too dark and took me a minute to actually see what the image was also the text blends in to the background. It needs to be changed. It needs to stand out from the cover. The description..it didn't hold my attention at all. This book has been recommended to me so I will read it but if I saw this online I'd skim past it.

Well, you can't argue with numbers. I think STEPBROTHER is getting hundreds of downloads a day. Oh, that reminds me. BOOK TITLE should be in a book page review! I knew something was missing!

Roger Jackson Hi everyone. I have three books:

A Shade of Mind
A Gathering of Lions and Lambs (Book 1)
A Reckoning of Lions and Lambs (Book 2)

I appreciate all reviews and comments.

I plan to look at the books listed in previous posts this weekend. Thanks.

Hi, Roger -

Just to be clear: this site isn't dedicated to book reviews; its aim is to review Amazon *book pages," focusing on first impressions of a book's cover, description, idea appeal, and title.

I'll give my opinion of your Lions and Lamb pages:

Cover: **

Title: **

Idea: **

Description: ***

Comments:

I thought the two books were equivalent in terms of the above aesthetic elements. Of course, this is my personal reaction, but to me the idea had no hook, and the titles were bland. The covers look (to my eye) pretty amateurish.

About SINISTER URGE, Frances, why not just clarify the brother and sister images a bit? I think your ideal cover would reflect the unusual nature of their relationship - I'd like to see something that symbolizes Sibling Ribaldry, if you will. :) A billion novels have covers with couples in some state of embrace, so I'd like to see an image that separates your unusual romance from theirs. :)

Roger Jackson Lawrence, yes I understand it is a review of the pages only. I appreciate your comments. They help a lot and I will look at improvements. Thanks.

Ohhh...sorry, Frances, but it's a big NO from me. First, I think brother and sister should be in there; second, the sister isn't some kind of harlot (just an all-American girl who has a thing for her bro';-); third, that image is pretty ugly, imo. But that's just me, gf. ;/

Are you doing your own covers, Frances? Just curious.

Hey, there's a website which has eviscerated some of my covers, so take my opinion for what it's worth. ;)

That might be a cool cover for something, Frances, but I don't see any connection with your novel - other than the title. I guess once you use "Sinister" you might feel obliged to include something sinister on the cover? But there's actually nothing at all sinister about the story itself. It reminds me a bit of my erstwhile novel, DEAD COUPLE WALKING. I thought it was a cool title, but it really didn't match the love story very well. Anyway, I created a cover on a dead couple walking theme. I thought it would be more dramatic or evocative. Maybe that's what you're going for...though the last couple of covers make it seem that your novel might be a parody or something, which it isn't. So...? What would work for me is maybe some rock band theme with the brother and sister in the foreground eyeing each other guiltily...?
