Eighth Grade Bites, by Heather Brewer, was a really interesting book in my opinion. I am not interested in the fantasy genre, so I was really hesitant to pick it up. I am so glad I did! The main character Vladimir Tod, is a 13-year-old half-vampire. His mother was a mortal and his father, a vampire. This novel could relate to so many teenagers because he is having these incredible troubles in middle school. Except, he is a vampire. Vlad lives with his “Aunt” who knows about his secret. I loved their relationship because it reminded me of the close relationship I have with my mother. She guides him to control his powers and even steals blood bags from the hospital she works at. One day in Vlad’s class, he realizes his English teacher is missing and a substitute, Mr. Otis, takes over. This gave me chills as I thought he would be evil. Mr. Otis reveals that he is there to help Vlad and teach him about his parents and their death. I then loved the relationship between Mr. Otis and Vlad. He was lost and found a mentor that guided him to know where he came from. I have had so many teachers that I could put my whole trust in, and it makes me want to be an amazing teacher. It was interesting when Mr. Otis assigned Vlad a project on vampires because it in a way gained his trust, and they built a relationship. The book took a wild turn when Vlad learns his parents fled because their romance was forbidden. I was terrified for this child because he was going to have to face the vampire society to keep himself safe. Without spoiling anything, the book ended leaving me wanting more. It was so intriguing and surprising. I am glad I picked it up.
