Persephone Books discussion

Happy October all , this month we will be reading my choice of Milton Place which is one of Persephone newly released books from earlier in the year ( number 131).
Hope you can join me this month !

I hope to have the book of Milton Place by next week and in the meantime, I’m working on finishing up Long Live Great Bardfield.

Just started and really enjoying it so far. Elisabeth de Waal wrote five books and none was published in her lifetime according to the preface written by her son Victor. The Exiles Return was published by Persephone books in 2013.
So funny that Mr Barlow's servants all run for the hills every wednesday morning when Emily arrives for her weekly visit to see her father.

So pleased to see this come up! I haven’t read The Exiles Return yet, so haven’t experienced de Waal’s writing. I bought Milton Place earlier this year and this makes an excellent reason to start It.

I'm going to put Long Live Great Bardfield: The Autobiography of Tirzah Garwood aside for now and start this one.

I'm looking forward to this. So many people have all enjoyed it, raved about it, time to see if it can live up to the hype. No pressure then - over to you Milton Place.

I’m pleased to see that you enjoyed it! :O) It makes me want to read it even more! Still haven’t got my copy. Won’t bore you with the silly details. I shall however have it before the month and read it. I’ve been so bad with my Persephone books, and yet there are in the bookcase right in front of me... I’m ordering Greenbanks and Mansfield’s Journal too :O)

I keep looking at the Persephone webpage in case the new books appear for sale (they are in the bottom of the list but you can’t access them), but not yet. It will probably be at the end of the month.

They have been announced. They are; Expiation by Elizabeth von Arnim, A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf, and 'One Woman's Year' by Stella Martin Currey. Forthcoming in the dropdown menu from Books. (I also check). :-)

Karen - nice. Looking forward to hearing what your review is of it. Somehow, I find short stories harder than novels.

Tania - I saw these too at the bottom of the list. It is so tempting, isn’t it :0)

I'm looking forward to the Elizabeth von Arnim one.

I think Short stories are a very hard form to write, but can be brilliant when done well.

I am enjoying Milton Place and should be finished today.

The Von Arnim one is also the one I’m interested in (loved her The Enchanted April, and have Vera to read). As it happens, I finally ordered yesterday (Milton, which I’ll read as soon as I get it; Greenbanks for next month; and Dimanche). And would you believe that the new books are available today!!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!! I missed them by 1 day!

About a third in and very much enjoying de Waal’s writing style. I also really like the characters of the old gentleman and Anita (the daughters not so much). The house itself, with the gardens, feels like a protagonist...

I’m late to the party but finally started this and am intrigued. What a pair of romantics to cherish the memory of their two dances for all those years! Also, I realized that the author was the grandmother of Edmund de Waal who wrote The Hare with the Amber Eyes about his family, so I may be adding that to my pile of books too ;).
