This is for a library patron and this is all she remembers. In my search I've found nothing that matches, and she insists it's not Coraline :/

About what year might she have read it? Can you guess at the age of the patron?
She is probably in her mid-forties and she says she read it about 5 years ago.
Maybe The Twistrose Key by Tone Almhjell? The main character goes into a magical world with her pet vole (not a mouse, but maybe close enough?)
