Very moving book. Similar plot to 'Goodnight Mister Tom' but not quite as devastating to read ; two refugee children with an abusive mother move to the country and are taken in by a reluctant woman. They slowly learn to trust and love. Then the mother reclaims them. Their foster mother finds them after a bombing and takes them back. The girl has a clubfoot which has never been treated. Themes of perseverance, caring for others, and social consequences of war. I will definitely be reading the sequel 'The War I Finally Won'.
