Originally published 1939. Features Superintendent Battle, Luke Fitzwilliam and Bridget Conway.

On her way to Scotland Yard to report several murders in her village, an elderly woman encounters retired policeman Luke Fitzwilliam. He dismisses her ravings about the murderer finding it easy to kill, as long as no one knows who he is--until two more killings occur, one of which is the old lady's. Previously titled Easy to Kill.

Here's the May 2020 book discussion.

Erin Green | 49 comments I’m partway through reading this month’s book. Sadly, I’ve seen a TV adaptation which is ruining my enjoyment of the original book. My brain keeps flicking to specific TV scenes which I now realise were the producer’s artistic license.

Erin Green | 49 comments I’ve just finished reading and I’m quite shocked. All I’ll say is I’ve never read a book before where TV adaptations have taken such liberties with.

I much prefer Christie’s original story line than the dark tragedy portrayed on screen.

I wonder what Christie would have thought?

It made for a very interesting read. I liked Luke Fitzwilliam too.

I've seen the version you're talking about and I hate it when TV producers think they're somehow improving the story. Christie had a fine dramatic/theatrical sense and her stories don't really need enhancement.

Erin Green | 49 comments I was shocked to be honest, Kim. I was reading Christie’s book waiting for other characters/plot points to happen and of course, they didn’t. I felt that the TV adaptation included really ‘dark’ material which made my wonder what AC would have thought.

Heather L (wordtrix) | 148 comments Read this last month, but never got round to commenting. I started to wonder about half way through if the murderer could be who it was, but Christie is such a master of red herrings, she makes you second guess yourself at every turn.

Thankfully, I have not seen the movie adaption, so did not have that clouding my judgment—though it was a problem with Appointment with Death.
