that happens all the time with me, usually it's just possums on our roof/in the walls etc. possums are so annoying!

This is a little on the late side, but if anything made of sheet-metal (or like sheet-metal) is in air that is changing temperatures (like at night when things get colder) it will make these odd popping/cracking noises that imitate a door being slammed very well. Garage doors are made of such metal, and if you have a metal roof, it will be made of a sheet-metal like substance.

I'm sorry. I've had a bit of a hiatus of goodreads. I used to use GR on my moblie iPhone app. I recently got an android and the app is not up to date. The gr app is about 4 years old and I'm not that much of a fan of the moblie site of GR. I'll start trying to come back more and adjusting to the site. My back. I hope I'm coming back.
