Love Alistair MacLean

I grew up reading his books and films

Guns Of Navarone

Where Eagles Dare

Ice Station Zebra

Three great films

message 20: by Kerry (new)

Kerry Donovan (kerrydonovan) | 97 comments My first 'grown up' book was the Complete Works of Sherlock Holmes.
After that, I read all the English books written my Alistair Maclean. when he 'moved' to the US and wrote stuff like Breakheart Pass, I'm afraid, I dropped him. :(

Jeffrey Marshall (jmarsh17) | 57 comments Wow! I've read a lot of books, but not that many of these, and to dredge up a list like this is impressive indeed.

From Forsyth, what about "Day of the Jackal" or "Eye of the Needle?"

message 28: by James (new)

James Best (jamesbest) | 124 comments EYE OF THE NEEDLE was Ken Follett and while I read that book about 10 years ago, I haven't sampled enough of Follett's other stuff to proclaim it as my favorite.

As for DAY OF THE JACKAL, it is probably my second favorite Forsyth novel after THE COBRA. But if DOTJ is #2 on the list then I would put AVENGER as a very close #2A.

message 29: by Bicky (new)

Bicky | 34 comments It is good to be informed about THE COBRA etc. For reasons I don't remember I stopped reading Forsyth despite loving The Odessa Files and DOTJ.

message 30: by James (new)

James Best (jamesbest) | 124 comments Be advised that there are two main characters in THE COBRA, but the secondary character was first introduced in Forsyth's novel entitled AVENGER. So you might want to read that book first. I read them in reverse order and still enjoyed them.

James Best (jamesbest) | 124 comments When it comes to UK mystery/thriller writers, there are several whose work I really like and regularly collect:

Philip Kerr - the Bernie Gunther series starting with MARCH VIOLETS

Ian Rankin - the John Rebus series starting with KNOTS & CROSSES

Robert Wilson - the Javier Falcone series, starting with THE BLIND MAN OF SEVILLE, along with his stand alone novel A SMALL DEATH IN LISBON

Minette Walters - I enjoyed her earlier stand alone novels, the best of which is probably THE SCULPTRESS

David Downing - the Station series, starting with ZOO STATION

Frederick Forsyth - already mentioned earlier, although I will put in a plug for THE ODESSA FILE

Mick Herron - the Slough House series, starting with SLOW HORSES. A favorite series of mine that is a bit "under the radar" although it has raked in several nominations for the top awards.
