I have read the book Bus 57 written by Dashka Slater and it was an enjoyable read. Since this is a nonfiction novel, the people and the events that took place in the book happened in real life. It was interesting for the author to actually include quotations from the individuals of the book. It was also quite interesting to read because as the audience, we were able to follow two people who came out as trans and we get to see their journeys. We also get to understand how autism affects the people who have it and the people closest to them. The novel also talked about suicide and how people back in 2012 were not so accepting of the LGBTQ+ community. It was devastating hearing Austin’s story, a friend of Sasha who is the main character, but it was part of their story and we got to see their internal strength. The people in the novel were quite inspiring and made me appreciate who I am as a person and the things that I like. Furthermore, the book covers in grave detail all of the LGBTQ+ terms for people to understand all of the different ways of expressing oneself. The book defined gender, sexuality, romance, and sex, and how they all had different meanings. I loved this part of the book because it was so refreshing to see a novel adopting and using all of the different ways that people can express themselves. I never read a book that broke down and used all of these keywords and it is refreshing to see that we are moving towards acceptance and understanding. Moreover, the novel goes into detail about the new pronouns that people can use for reference purposes. It also discussed assault cases and how the parents of Sasha, were worried for they because of all of the assaults that happened to people from the LGBTQ+ community. It was such a riveting book and it has taught me a lot about autism, the LGBTQ+ community, and how one small moment in time can leave a drastic consequence that will follow you forever. The messages, the topics, and everything in between that was covered by this book was so educational and well written that you never want to put it down.
