L. J. Smith's books went out of print for a bit. When Twilight came out, Vampire Diaries was brought back into print. I believe the publisher put two books into one volume to make the books look more like Twilight. After Vampire Diaries, they reprinted Secret Circle. Since that is a trilogy it's wild that they did two volumes, but I think they just wanted them to match her other books? New Vampire Diaries books started to come out after the show became popular. L. J. Smith had apparently been hired to write those when they first came out; the concept was owned by the publisher. She wanted the tone of the new books to match the old books and the publisher wanted them to match the tv series. She was fired from writing Vampire Diaries. At some point the newer books say "L. J. Smith's Vampire Diaries" but have a different author.
