A mind-blowing exploration of how the internet is bending the english language at a nosebleed pace. The author, a linguist for wired magazine, posits that so much is changing at such a rapid pace, that future generations will look back on our era and find it as fascinating as we now find the words of Shakespeare or Latin or Norman French and their impact on language. The book is at its best when it looks at the pov of what Mcculloch calls FULL INTERNET people, the generation who have only known the world with the internet and would prefer conversations via whats app or snapchat than by phone, and how they have fluidly and democratically warped formal written norms. The book is so different to the normally depressing crap I read week in and week out, I loved it. It is worth reading for the chapters on the evolution of LOL and the language of emoji alone. There are few books I have read this year that have made me think more differently about the world around me and I hope I am a better listener as a result. -Rog
