Andrea My graphic novel choice was Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier, this book had a bit of adventure and intrigue. This was not my favorite book of the semester, it could be because it was a “comic book” that was NOT Calvin and Hobbs, which is the only book in this genre that I’ve read in the last many years.

The story starts with Catrina (Cat) and Maya moving to a coast town in Northern California, where the fresh sea air will be good for Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. Cat is not a fan of the town or the move, she misses her friends and thinks the town is eerie, but will try because it will be good for Maya. The rumor is the town is haunted, much to Cat’s dismay, Maya on the other hand is fascinated by this news. Carlos, a new friend, takes them on a tour of the town to give them a little history and show the girls the most haunted places to visit. Of course, they meet ghosts, who are apparently a little shy around people they don’t know…they love Maya the outgoing and braver of the two sisters where ghosts are concerned. All the fun lands Maya in the hospital and Cat blames Carlos…

The book has Cat attending a Dia De Las Muertos event and meeting Jose’ a ghost she brings to meet Maya, as she’s still sick and missing the festivities, they talk about dying and being a ghost. It covers a whole range of emotions for these girls, but the message is good…love and family.
