Sara (mootastic1) | 770 comments The history of the light bulb is far more complex and fraught than I ever knew. Last Days of Night tells the story of the battle fought between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to bring light to the streets and homes of the United States, as seen though the eyes of Westinghouse's young lawyer, Paul Cravath.

As Cravath, a prodigy just out of law school and made partner almost immediately, tends to the needs of his client, he encounters a glittering life he never expected, opera singer Agnes Huntington, curious inventor Nikolas Tesla, and even the reclusive Alexander Graham Bell.

As the author tells us, this fictionalized account of this momentous era in history, is all true, though he may have fudged the timeline a bit here and there, and in the case of Agnes added to her back story as her life before her ride to fame is completely unknown.

I was fascinated by this book, equally so by the detailed author's note at the end. I added several books referenced by Moore, and I look forward to learning more about the advent of electricity. Even Paul Cravath changed history in his own way, and it is due to him that every law firm operates in the manner that we now consider to be the norm. The author did a fantastic job of bringing each of these historical figures to life, and keeping the reader engaged in history. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction filled with drama, action, and even a romance.
