Just being a critic for everything I'm going to try really hard to say some good stuff before I get too negative. I really like the premise of the story, of the overall story, and this beginning is not too bad. I really like how there is a lot of description of the setting and Tana's emotions and thoughts which are all very realistic and relatable. I liked how Black didn't forget that Tana is supposed to be a real human character that feels shock, hunger, adrenaline rushes, etc. Sadly not all authors include things like that in their writing, which makes their characters too cartoonish.
Okay, so what I didn't like: I don't think 16 year olds are mature enough or decisive enough to actually make the choices and actions that Tana does. It would have been better if the age level for all of the characters had been a bit older, like 22-27ish. That seems really specific but I think it would make more sense to me anyways.
I also don't understand Adian and Tana's relationship much. It might be out of my own ignorance of such people, but their whole past stories just don't make sense to me. But I guess that's not too important for the plot really, just character development. Also, I just don't like Adian.
So far the story has been okay for me. The positives make up for the negatives, but I don't think that's a sign of a great book only bearable.
Let's see what happens later on...

Interesting. The weird dynamic between Tana and Aiden actually makes me more intrigued. I like it when characters have characteristics that make them messed up because it makes them more realistic to me. And the age thing is a problem often in YA :(

How do you guys feel about the plot setup?
Do you like the characters?
Does this feel fresh or derivative of other vampire related works?
