I'm reading Victory by Linda Hirshman Victory The Triumphant Gay Revolution by Linda R. Hirshman . As I read about how people have fought for basic human rights just because they didn't fit inside the pre-conceived box of "normal", it makes me sad and kinda pissed if you want honesty.
But the stories of fighting and sticking in there when it looked like no change was coming is also empowering. There's a long way to go, but seeing just how bad it was, say, in the 50's when LGBTQ+ people could be fired on the spot and were banned from almost everything if they came out, is just appallingly shocking to this millennial. People like Eisenhower purposely made laws to suppress LGBTQ+ peoples.
One story of a man name Hans who came to American and was shamed, only to return to his native Germany in time for the Nazis to put him in a camp, made me cry.
Or the service man who after serving in WWII finally came out to his family when they tried to match-make him with girls, only to be immediately shunned. I know some families still shun their LGBTQ+ family members, but the blatant hate shown in these pages disgusts the shit out of me.

On a lighter note, I found out that Grandpa Walton from the TV show The Walton's was totally gay . . .wonder if Grandma Walton knew that. ; )
