Favorite Quote:
“Yes,” replied the gypsy; “it is to be brother and sister; two souls which touch without mingling, two fingers on one hand.”
“And love?” pursued Gringoire.
“Oh! love!” said she, and her voice trembled, and her eye beamed. “That is to be two and to be but one. A man and a woman mingled into one angel. It is heaven.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis...
When Charles VII died in 1461, Louis left the Burgundian court to take possession of his kingdom. His taste for intrigue and his intense diplomatic activity earned him the nicknames "the Cunning" (Middle French: le rusé) and "the Universal Spider" (Middle French: l'universelle aragne), as his enemies accused him of spinning webs of plots and conspiracies.
Perhaps the most significant contribution of Louis XI to the organization of the modern state of France was his development of the system of royal postal roads. In this system, relays at instant service to the king operated on all the high roads of France; this communications network spread all across France and led to the king acquiring his nickname "Universal Spider".[24]
Louis was anxious to speed up everything, transform everything, and build his own new world.[21
Louis XI also involved himself in the affairs of the Church in France. In October 1461, Louis abolished the Pragmatic Sanction that his father had instituted in 1438 to establish a French Gallican Church free of the controls of the popes in Rome

Just completed #8 (about the past) - I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer by Michelle McNamara. Overall, I appreciated the writing and obvious effort that went into this book. This is not a book to read at night home alone without quadruple-checking the locks, and even that might still require putting the book in the freezer (at least it did for me). The chronology was really wonky for me and left me confused as to the sequence of events. Part of that might have been a deliberate pattern on the author's part that wasn't fully realized due to her death before completing the book. But it did detract from it for me. Her fine writing is even more evident when compared with the final chapter and afterword of her husband and others. Worth reading! 4 stars
