William Berg | 3 comments This book was full of amazing poetry. There was almost every type of poetry and I read some very unique pieces. One of the pieces that stood out to me especially was one that read, “trying to convince myself i am allowed to take up space is like writing with my left hand when i was born to use my left hand” This was a very unique piece in many was. One thing I liked is how there was no uppercase letters and no punctuation. I felt like that fit very well with the piece and showed me you don’t always have to follow perfect english principals.
Another piece that stood out to me was, “I am learning how to love him by loving myself.” This piece is so strong and powerful and that is the whole poem not just a little part. The fact that such a small poem can have a strong meaning shows the importance of every word you use, and that you better use every one effectively.
Lastly this book taught me the same thing as SLAM which is how to write poetry without using rhyming or repetition. This was always I struggled with and will continue to struggle with, but I am working on. My current piece 3 is not using rhyming so I looked for my favorite poem without rhyming and found this one, “I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you. I left because the longer I stayed the less I loved myself.” This is a very poetic sounding poem and doesn’t have any rhyming, and it is very effective.
