Cath Russell This year I'm being less ambitious than last and going for a smaller mountain, Mont Blanc. Except that I'm going to try and make the 24 books count by reading 24 chunky or non-fiction books... of which I have 'many' waiting to be read!

My blog post is here:

message 2: by Zaara (new)

Zaara Welcome Cath...I will be following our reviews and cheering you on....by the way I'm joining you at this level...

message 3: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Hi Zaara, nice to meet you. I tried Mount Ararat this year and will not quite make it, so I thought I'd pitch my ambitions a bit lower for next year. LOL!

message 4: by Zaara (new)

Zaara :-) all the best...I didn't get to read much this year either...moved city twice...

message 5: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell I read quite a lot... just not my own books. I'm kind of addicted to the library. :-D

Welcome back, Cath! Any TBR mountain conquered is a good one--good luck!

message 7: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Thanks very much, Bev! :-)

message 8: by Zaara (new)

Zaara Hi Cath...wanted to wish you a happy new year. All the best for your reading goals too. Once you firm them up, let me know if you'd like to read Mockingbird or Herodotus together.

message 9: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Glad to see you back Cath! I know what you mean about the addictive qualities of the library :D

Good luck with your climb!

message 10: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Thanks Zaara! A Happy New Year to you too. :-)

Hi Leslie! Nice to see you here again too. It's that whole 'free book' thing at the library. :-D

Good luck to you too!

message 11: by Zaara (new)

Zaara Hi Cath..stopped by your blog post...ive read a couple on your TBR..the Agatha Christie autbiography...definitely the best thing she's written. And Tigana. Its good too.
Outlander and the Rothfuss books are on my TBR list too...SIGH...the list never gets shorter, does it?
Keep going...hope you're near about where u wanted to be for Jan. Cheers, Zaara

message 12: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Hi Zaara! Ooooh... I'll definitely get to reading AC's autobiography then! I *must* read Outlander this year *and* The Name of the Wind. Nope... the list *never* ever gets shorter. LOL!

Thanks! Good luck to you too. :-)

Just checked out the review on your blog...good on ya!
Those photos of the sketches....wow!

message 19: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Hi Zaara. Thanks. Going well - halfway through my fourth and fifth book for Mount tbr. :-)

Yeah, the illustrations in Untrodden Peaks and Unfrequented Valleys are pretty stunning.

message 20: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell My book 4 for Mount TBR 2015 is Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers. Loved it to bits.

I love Sayers! Off to look at your review...

Sayers is one of my all-time favorites!

message 23: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Leslie: Since I discovered Sayers during the Vintage Crime challenge she's become a huge favourite with me. Such a sublime writer.

Bev: I can understand that... she's now one of mine too. I adored Gaudy Night, just loved it. Can't get it out of my head even though I'm now reading something else.

message 24: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell My book 5 for Mount TBR 2015 is The Virago Book of Women Travellers edited by Mary Morris and Larry O'Connor.

message 25: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell My book 6 for Mount TBR is The Tenderness of Wolves by Stef Penney. Adored this book and gave it 5 stars.

http://read-warbler.blogspot.co.uk/20...

If I keep this up I'm on course for Mt. Vancouver rather than Mont Blanc, but we'll see.

message 26: by Leslie (new)

Leslie You are reading some good books this year Cath!

And congrats for making the quarter mark!

message 27: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Leslie: I'm really pleased with how good some of the books I've read so far this year have been.

Thank you! :-)

I read your review of this book...straight from the heart and full of personal insights, but that's nothing new ;-) I've come to take your usual high standards for granted. I particularly liked the part where you say there is a time for each book and it will find you only in that moment. I guess this happens to all of us...the universe speaks to us sometimes thru what we read...and it's just what we need to hear in that time, in that one droplet of infinity.
Touched a chord! Keep 'em coming, Cath.

message 29: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Aww, thanks for your nice words about my scribblings, Zaara. :-)

the universe speaks to us sometimes thru what we read

Exactly! How beautifully put. And because I want to know about this universe we live in I want to read 'everything'. Which can be a bit of a problem... ;-)

message 30: by Zaara (new)

Zaara Hehe yeah...book greed.. all the different kinds: wanna read once/wanna put on hold at the library/I've gotta buy that someday/I'm getting this one NOW...among others. Its funny really :-) all of us here with our neverending TBR lists and yet, as a friend of mine once put it (I think she had it as her status update): "adding to TBR...my favourite activity on GR."
I literally laughed out loud.

message 31: by Zaara (new)

Zaara You're going great Cath. I know you will conquer this one and I'm hoping you are able to hike one of the higher peaks...
*CHEERS*

message 32: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Oh yes... 'book greed'... a perfect description of it. And too funny about adding to the TBR pile. Another favourite activity here is creating a new shelf and finding the right books to put on it. I'm very easily pleased. LOL!

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I'll climb this peak and who knows... maybe the next one. We'll see.

Cath, you're doing great with awesome reviews to go along with it!

And I'm right there with you and Zaara with the "book greed." I have already acquired more books this year than I have managed to knock off the TBR mountain....

message 36: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Thanks, Bev!

I think the same applies to me. LOL!

And....a library clearance sale is looming at the end of the month. Will I be able to resist?

I am sure the answer is a resounding "NO". LOL

I would say not....that's why the Mount TBR Challenge is needed for so many of us. :-)

message 40: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell a library clearance sale is looming at the end of the month. Will I be able to resist?

Ours was today, Bev... only small but I still came home with 4 books. LOL! Lost cause.

Nooooo, you are certainly not alone, Leslie. :-D

message 41: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell My book 7 for Mount TBR is Helliconia Winter a science fiction story by Brian W. Aldiss.

message 42: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Two more books off the mountain! Brief reviews of books 8, Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton, and 9, Clear Waters Rising by Nicholas Crane, are here:

http://read-warbler.blogspot.co.uk/20...

message 43: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Great review of Tooth and Claw! That has been on my TBR for a while now but you have moved it up considerably :)

message 44: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Leslie: Thanks! It's a very unusual idea which shouldn't work but actually does. :-)

Great reviews, Cath! Tooth & Claw does sound interesting.

And...back to our discussion of library book sales...I went to ours yesterday. And walked out with 40 new (to me) books. All vintage mysteries--you know how hard it is for me to resist those. I'm proud to say that I didn't walk out with ALL the vintage mysteries that were were there...see, I can exercise some self-control. Lol.

Wow Bev, great haul! I love those British mysteries from the 'Golden Age' (and quite a lot of the American ones too).

Leslie, it really was. I had missed the first two days of the sale and (based on the slim mystery pickings of the last two years) wasn't expecting much to be left. I nearly fell over when I saw the treasure trove.

message 48: by Cath (new)

Cath Russell Thanks, Bev!

LOL... that's just too funny. :-D Well, it would have been cruel not to liberate those 40 captive books. We can't have cruelty to 'books' now can we???

My town library's sale was so small a couple of weeks ago I only got 4 books. I'm waiting for a couple of the larger towns in Devon to have one then I'll be staggering out of the building like you. ;-P
