Aleta | 53 comments Hello! Welcome to The Genre Explorers, I'm Aleta, the founder of the group :) It's my first time moderating, so hopefully you will bear with me if mistakes are made.

I'm a college student hoping to transfer to something called Literary Science next year. The site made me choose a country for the group, so as it seems so many people on the site are Americans, I chose US. I'm from Scandinavia though :)
I love reading almost any kind of book, but my not-so-guilty pleasure is 19th century adventure books and basically all kinds of books from that period.

So! Enough about me, let's hear about you! :)

Aleta, I'm intrigued by your vision for this group and I like the way you've organized the threads to start.

I'm Terri, and I've been a member of GR for a couple of years. I live in the Midwest USA. In my working life I was a registered nurse, but I've not been able to work for several years and thus I have a lot of time to read. I read a little bit of everything, but my favorites are literary fiction, short stories, and 19th century fiction, especially British. I also read a lot of nonfiction. I think The Genre Explorers has a lot of potential!

Aleta | 53 comments Hi Terri, so glad you've joined :)

I'm so in awe of how many books you seem to read, even if you have a lot of free time, it's really impressive. It's funny, I have so many nonfiction books on my tbr list that I badly want to read, yet I never seem to get around to them.

Thank you for the kind words about the group! I really hope it'll take off well :)

Brianna Andreda Hello. I'm Brianna. I live on the east coast of the USA. I love reading all types of genres, but my favorites are mysteries, young adult, and literary fiction. I'm a college student myself studying law. I'm hoping to go to law school, but it's so expensive lol.

I have a lot of nonfiction books on my TBR shelf too, but I think I only read 1 nonfiction book this year.

This group looks like it will be very interesting, I'm glad to have been sent an invitation to join.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Brianna! I hope you'll be an active part of this group. I agree, it should be interesting.

message 6: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Great to have you join Brianna :) I've started reading some mysteries and such lately, something I never did before, but finding it quite entertaining.

I feel so blessed that I live in a country where education is free. Being interested in studying abroad, I looked up prices at various American universities - wow was I taken aback by the insane price tag of a single semester lol! I hope you'll find a way to be able to go :)

Brianna Andreda Yes I plan to be very active in this group. And yes education is so very expensive, but I hope that I will be able to go as well. Thank you very much for your support Aletha. I think the only genre I've never read is erotica. I tried and just couldn't finish the book.

message 8: by Ally (new)

Ally Hi everyone! I'm Ally.

Lately, I've been dipping my toes into a few new genres. Now I think I'm ready to explore them more thoroughly :)

Thanks, Aleta, for creating the group! Don't worry about being new. It sounds like you have a good plan. :)

message 9: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Hello Ally, nice to meet you :)

I hope the group will help you do just that. We're going to have some challenges and such along the way, so I think it'll give everyone the possibility of exploring the genre as much as they can/will in a month :)

And thank you! Glad to hear it sounds sound so far lol.

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Ally! Welcome to the group. :)

message 11: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 17, 2014 08:59AM) (new)

Greetings everyone:
I'm a big fan of fiction. I like the vision of the group, "Genre Explorers", so looking forward to our expeditions together.

message 12: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Welcome aboard MsG!

I'm glad to hear that you look forward to exploring and I hope you get a lot of fun out of it :)

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, MsG! Glad you're becoming part of the group!

message 14: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 76 comments I like to read as broadly as possible. I try not to exclude any genres or sub-genres though there are some that I rarely read. That's why I'm interested in this group.

message 15: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Hello Shomeret, nice to have you with us :) I try to do the same, I just counted how many different sub-/genres I read this year and counted about 40 out of around 60 or so books!

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Shomeret! So glad you've joined us!

message 17: by Kalena (new)

Kalena (bookt2) Hello! My name is Kalena (Thank you, Ally, for inviting me to the group). One reason I enjoy Goodreads is because I constantly learn about new authors, books, and genres. Always looking for interesting people to talk about books with.

message 18: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Welcome to the group Kalena :)
That's one of the things I love about GR too. Even if I haven't read a book or author, I often know a little about it/them from checking this site. It's really focused my reading as well since due to the tbr list etc, I can actually remember which books I wanted to read!

message 19: by Ally (new)

Ally Glad you joined, Kalena. :)

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

A hearty welcome, Kalena!

message 21: by Len (new)

Len (lengroan) Hi! I'm Elena from Spain. I like to read a lot; however, it seems that I'm stuck with my usual favorite genres (fantasy and science-fiction). I hope to discover new interesting books in this group. :)

I don't know how active I will be. It has been a long time since I tried new genres, plus I usually have a lot to read for my major (it's my last year!). However, I'll try to keep up with all of you!

message 22: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Welcome, Elena!
It's all too easy to stay in your comfort zone when it comes to reading, I think we all for victim to that lol :) And I also love those genres, they're so complex and fun!

I hope there'll be so many interesting books that you won't have any trouble trying new genres with us :) And congrats in it being your last year!

message 23: by Sarita (new)

Sarita Hello

I'm Sarita, and live in Cape Town South Africa. I'm an extrovert and very active/outdoors - running, trail-running, hiking, plus visiting all the fabulous wine estates and other awesome places Cape Town has.

I also love reading. Found my love for reading again last year when I joined goodreads. I have loads of books on my TBR and too little time to read them all.

This group idea is great - I usually keep to my favorite genre - suspense/mystery and anything by Karen Kingsbury.

Not sure how active I will be on this group due to limited time, but will try to join a monthly read when I can.

message 24: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Hi Sarita, welcome to the group :)

That sounds very interesting, I've always wanted to be outdoorsy and sporty, but alas, I've come to terms with being someone who'd much rather sit indoors with a good book or movie lol.

I just started reading some mysteries this year, hadn't really read any before and found it quite entertaining. It's always so great to discover a new genre you like!

Looking forward to seeing you around on groupreads threads one in a while then :)

message 25: by Aminko (new)

Aminko Hi All,

Reading is one of my favourite things to do and I enjoy reading all sorts of genres, except maybe horror. It's really about the enjoyment of a good story or if I'm reading non-fiction, learning something interesting. I must confess that I do have a preference for romance mainly because the tend to be easy reading and I have a stressful job.

I love the idea of this group as a way of expanding the genres I read and maybe even finding a new favourite!

Thank you Aleta for creating the group.

I look forward to discovering new stories and participating in great discussions.

message 26: by Aleta (new)

Aleta | 53 comments Welcome, Amy :)

I can completely relate, it's one of the reasons I love reading adventure stories, they're just so easy and so much fun. But it's always great to get out of one's comfort zone. I hope you might find some new genres to relax with after a long day at work!

Looking forward to seeing you around :)

Hello, my name is Talia and I live in Arizona. I work for a court reporting firm in the office most of the time, but I'm a legal videographer as well. I prefer staying home and reading a pile of books any day. Whenever I go out to a function, after the first 30 minutes I start thinking of all the reading I could be doing at home!

I love reading action/adventure, dystopian, and mystery novels, and last year I read a lot of good fantasy novels. I wanted to explore more genres this year, so I'm glad I was invited to this group (thanks, Brianna!). I have tried a couple historical fiction books so far and was shocked that I really enjoyed them! Looking forward to joining in for the group reads!

Welcome Talia :D

Glad to see you've joined the group and thanks for accepting the invitation. I wish I lived n Arizona right now instead of Ohio. I've lived here all my life and I still can't get used to the wishy-washy weather.

I also love to read dystopian novels. Hopefully you'll find even more genres that you'll like. I look forward to seeing you around.

Welcome, Talia. Historical fiction is my favorite genre, so I'm glad you discovered it. I also read a great deal of mysteries and fantasies. But as you'll discover I've read in practically every genre. I'm in this group to explore genres that I don't know as well as others.

message 30: by Riley (new)

Riley (rileyroo) | 1 comments Hey, I'm Riley and I love Fantasy YA Fiction like Throne of Glass and Snow Like Ashes . I read really fast, so new books are always welcome with me. I'm very childish and love Disney movies. Hopefully I'll find new books to read and enjoy here!

message 31: by Brianna (new)

Welcome Riley!

I've started reading more Fantasy YA fiction this year than I usually do. I have Snow Like Ashes and Throne of Glass on my to-read shelf. How did you like them? I hope you'll find some interesting books and branch into more genres by joining The Genre Explorers.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kristi Jefferson (kristijefferson) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Kristi Jefferson. I'm an author of Self-Help Books. I love to read self-Help and self-improvement books. Nice to know you all.

Welcome to the group Kristi; we're glad to have you. I don't think I've read a self-help or self-improvement book before, although I do have a few on my TBR shelf.

These Violent Delights (Robin) Hey everyone, I'm Robin!! Can't wait to discuss bookish things with you all!

message 35: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) Hi! I'm Melissa, I'm from America, and I heard about this group because Aleta posted in a group for moderators.

message 36: by John (new)

John Bentley (jaybeetrs) | 1 comments Hi I'm John and seem to be the only male member here. Is this within the group rules? Often a book may cover a whole variety of genres and so gets left out by those searching for specific genres. It would be good to see multi-genre single books recommended on this site.
