Ally Maybe a thread for asking for recommendations? In a group that reads a variety of genres, that could be helpful :)

Aleta | 53 comments I plan on having one each month specific for that month's genre. Is that what you were thinking of? :) Or also a more general one?

Ally I was thinking more general. Like we have a specific kind of book we want to read and need suggestions.

Aleta | 53 comments That's a great idea Ally :) Hadn't thought of it and it would be really useful. I'll still have the monthly threads as well and will add the recommendations there to our bookshelf. But yes, a general thread would be very good to have especially for when you want to get recs for genres not read in the group yet.

Rushing off to add it as soon as the group read threads for next month have been made.

Shomeret | 76 comments I decided to put my reactions to Brianna's proposals here because I think the group should discuss these issues.

Re questions in Chapter Breakdowns-- Chapter Breakdowns means extra work for Brianna. Will we necessarily want to discuss books as we read them? I've done this in groups that had Chapter Breakdowns, but I really prefer discussing the book as a whole after I've finished it. Maybe it's because I change my opinion of the book as I read, and it feels premature to be posting reactions before I've finished. I may completely change my view of earlier events in the novel by the time I finished because often everything becomes clearer in the end.

Re hidden questions-- I'm not spoiler sensitive, so you don't need to hide questions for me. I'm sure there are other people who are spoiler sensitive. It's also true that questions can be more general and apply to any fiction. That type of question needn't be hidden behind spoiler tags.

Another solution to this problem, is that people can just postpone reading the discussion until after they've finished the book.

Re alternate BOTM for people who don't like the chosen genre-- You can't please everybody. Some people may not want to read either BOTM.

There's a group called Read By Theme which picks a theme for the month. This month the theme is purple covers. They don't choose a BOTM. Everyone chooses their own book. So you can read any book with a purple cover. People post what they're reading. This is useful because other members can get suggestions. I didn't know what I wanted to read that had a purple cover until I found a post by another member who is reading a book that sounded interesting. If you don't like the theme, you announce that you're a Theme Rebel and start a thread for what you decided to read instead. I'm telling you about this so you know that there's another way to handle the problem of people not liking a genre. Maybe having Genre Rebels who post the reads that they've chosen would work better.

I like the idea of the Genre Rebels, I think I'll try and find a way to incorporate that into our group theme. Maybe something like "(Month's) Lost Genre Explorers"
