Hi friends! We are so excited to start this readalong with all of you! What a great chance to read or reread some much beloved books together!

Both of us have created quick welcome videos for you to watch to explain how we hope the group will go and just say hi!
Sarah's video: https://youtu.be/QCNr4-1xbys
Krista's video: https://youtu.be/mrb9HXPutdc

Feel free to read at your own pace and comment in the appropriate thread as you complete each section. Please don't give spoilers for further sections until the appropriate thread. There are no set dates, but we have broken The Hobbit into 4 sections so you could read one group of chapters each week in January.

Don't forget to hop on often to read other people's thoughts and comments as well. Interact, ask questions, connect with each other as we are reading! I hope we all make some new bookish buddies through this readalong.

Have fun in The Shire! Happy New Year!

Starting today...finally!

message 10: by Angela (new)

Angela I am really hoping that the discussions in this group and the schedule will finally spur me to read the complete series. I have read The Hobbit, so that will be a re-read. It was just OK for me. Fellowship will also be a re-read. That's where I stalled, because I found it to be really dull. I hope the discussions into why others love these books so much will allow me to enjoy them more and finally finish them out. Thanks for starting this read along!

Wendy Galloway (wendygalloway) I am behind but I will catch up..

Ruth Ginarlis | 3 comments I hope you don't find it dull, it really is a masterpiece. The background to the book is interesting as Tolkien published the Hobbit in 1937 and the Ring trilogy wasn't published until 1955, although finished in about 1947. The backdrop was one of war and violent change, which I think is reflected in the story, and a nostalgia for an England which was fast disappearing and challenged by the forces of evil. Also Tolkien, as a staunch Catholic, was trying to convey the idea of temptation and redemption. Apart from all that it is a brilliant read! Excellent choice.

O'Colemain | 4 comments The first time I tried to read Fellowship I had a hard time with the detailed descriptions, I ended up getting an audiobook instead and then loved it. I can’t remember which reader it was but he made all the descriptions come to life rather than bog me down. One of the nice things about an audio is you can “read” while commuting, or before bed when you want to turn off the lights and wind down, or while exercising, or any number of other activities.

Agreed! I love audiobooks, and Tolkien's books have some really good ones.
