Can I share some photos of the Tall Ships at Hartlepool recently?

Recently finished "Six Frigates" by Ian Toll. Excellent history of the founding of the US Navy. I thought I knew rigging....yikes!

This group serioulsy needs some action!

Maybe everyone is cruising....=))

But since I am a curious kitty, I would like to ask a general question and see what happens.

How did you all discover your love for the ocean, for sailing, for ships and for books about them?

I was a desert rat in Arizona and have only seen the ocean once in a childhood family trip up the California coast and have never been to sea. But I used to listen to my Dad reading Treasure Island aloud to my brother, who was sick at the time. Loved the story and the way my Dad read it. For years after that I wanted to be a lady pirate....drove my Mother nuts. Ever since then I have enjoyed reading all types of sea tales.

Hi Debbie. For me it started when my Dad told me stories about his experiences in the Navy, which led to my joining the Navy as well. While in the Navy I saw sailboats at sea and deserted islands and thought, "Hey, I could do that too." And so I did. Circumnavigated the Pacifc and now I live in Arizona.

Good question Debbie. I was entrenched in the corporate world, I didn't know the sailing world existed. Then I lost someone very close to me, they were young and I realised the same could happen to me and why was I giving all my time to someone else? So I ran away - literally . . . it's all in Of Foreign Build, out November-ish time!

Sometimes the traumatic events in our lives push us to where we are supposed to be, don't they. I admire you and Steve both for daring to do what it was time for you to do. I think a lot of people ignore those types of signals....and look what they miss. I will be sure to watch for your book!!

Hi, how is everyone? I've been busy reading and writing and eating chocolate myself.

I don't have too many of my 'sea stories' books here in Mexico with me but I hope to bring a few down when I visit my mom in November. Meanwhile I looked here for possibilities to read online:

There are three pages there! Just a quick glance they seem to be mostly charts or instructions for various areas....I thought all you real sailors might get a kick out of them.
I do think they need to tidy up their lists though...The Smooth Sailing Cookbook turned out to be for beginning cooks, not for ship's cooks....oh well....=))

Hi Debbie, I've been busy painting and sanding the boat, and of course, eating chocolate! I had a quick look - thanks for the link - they all seems a bit dated - mind you Pilots can be used for many years, not much changes (but they have to be kept up to day) - interesting stuff - such BORING covers! :-)

Hi Debbie and all.... we are having a break from sailing but still on a boat - we have just bought a Dutch Barge in France - and THAT is an interesting exercise. While it doesn't "sail" we are still on the water - and are finally leaving port tomorrow to head south - to the Canal du Midi for winter, tomorrow. I saw someone talking about uploading some pictures to share - I'd like to do that - but can't see how we do it here... any one know (if not, I am creating a photo album on our nine year sail around the world (to compliment the book) once that is done - I will let you know!

Wow, Jackie...what an exciting adventure! I hope you write a book about the barge too!
I've seen pictures in the various groups but I have no clue how they get posted. As you can see, I don't even have a picture of myself....I'm lucky to get from page to page and send e-mails....anything more complicated and I'm lost. =)) Maybe Steve would know....it would be cool to see your pictures!

I just did my morning check of my favorite online newspaper and look what I found this time....a picture article about bookshops...I want to go to Greece so I can rent a cat while I read! =))
