First five books of the year

1. The Pact 512pp
This book is really horrible. (view spoiler)

2. The Rosie Project 295pp
3. The Slap 570pp
4. Sweet Tooth 320pp
Boring! I have no interest in espionage but I thought I would like anything by ian mcewan. Nope. The ending was quite good but really not worth reading the other 300 pages.

5. The Ocean at the End of the Lane 181pp
My favorite Neil Gaiman book so far.

*1878 pages / 5 books so far*

Cassandra | 5832 comments Good luck with your challenges, Meg! It looks like you've got some really great books planned out.

What did you think of The Ocean at the End of the Lane? I read that last year and really enjoyed it.

message 11: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 501 comments Thanks Cassandra - I have spent so much time planning that I have hardly been reading! I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane - probably my favourite Neil Gaiman ever!

message 12: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Yeah, I definitely have the problem of spending more time on Goodreads than actually reading, so I know what you mean!

Now that you mention it, I think it might be my favorite Gaiman work as well. I picked him for my complete works author, though, so I still have several of his books to get through before I can be sure.

message 13: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 501 comments Cool! I'll follow your progress to see if any of his others stand out (although I would probably like to read all of his books eventually anyway).

6. Winter of the World 940pp
7. The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made 270pp
This book was absolutely hilarious. All fans of The Room should read this - the movie makes so much sense now. Actually the movie still makes no sense, and neither does the unique and fascinating Tommy P Wiseau. Room co-star Greg Sestero provides an insight into the man behind the movie and the incredible way the movie was made. If you haven't seen The Room, watch it, watch it again, then read this.

10.The Girl Who Chased the Moon 269pp
This was my first book by Sarah Addison Allen and it won't be my last. It was light and fluffy and as sweet as snuggling into a big piece of cake. Nice touches of fantasy, romance, and mystery. Easy and enjoyable to read.

11.Does My Head Look Big In This? 360pp
Amal is a normal Aussie teenager - worried about friends, boys, parents, school - with the additional complication that she is a Muslim girl and has decided to start wearing the hijab full-time. The book started off well, I really liked Amal - she was cool and self-assured and funny. But she started to annoy me after a while, she was a bit too perfect, a bit of a self-righteous goody goody. There also wasn't really much of a story-line; the decision to wear a hijab and what followed was interesting, but not much happened after that, it just revisited the same thing over and over. Still, fans of YA fiction will probably find it a decent read.
12. The Book of Strange New Things 500pp
What an interesting book, full of strange new ideas. I knew nothing about it when I started reading it, and I think that was the right way. So I won't tell you what it is about. The slow and suspense-full reveal in the beginning set up the book wonderfully, I couldn't put it down. From there it gets both darker and more wondrous as the story unravels and you get to know the characters and the world around them.

Meg (megscl) | 501 comments February Challenge: The Saints Go Marching In

Aiming for 5
5/5

1. Read a book about music, or someone who is falsely accused of something.
Station Eleven is about a traveling symphony: read 1/2/15

2. Read a book where the main characters give into their vices or evil or read a book where nature or animals is an important part of the story.

3. Read a book about a fierce battle or war.

4. Read a book about slavery or read a book that takes place in Ireland.

5. Read a story where the main character struggles with and overcomes his or her own faults, whether they be physical, emotional, personality or other faults.

6. Read a book where there is an angel or other paranormal being or read a book where someone is sentenced to death. Servant of the Bones

7. Read a book where people live a simple life and do not have a luxurious lifestyle or read a book about royalty. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

8. Read a book about an arranged marriage or read a book about prostitution. Frog Music

9. Read a book about a character who runs away, or read a book where someone drastically changes his or her appearance.

10. Read a book about some kind of suffering or read a book that contains a miracle. The Satanic Verses

13. Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch 413pp
I found it very difficult to follow what was happening. Not sure whether it was because of A) the way I read it - I tend to zone out a bit in audiobooks, and also there was a one month gap in the middle for me when I was on holidays, or B) there actually wasn't much of a plot to get.
That said, I actually enjoyed this book! It was quite funny and the characters were interesting, so I almost felt like having a storyline was a secondary consideration. I liked the humourous adaptations of biblical mythology - like Famine, one of the four horsemen, being a marketer of diet products.
14. Us 400pp
15. Veinte poemas de amor y una cancion de desesperada y cien sonetos de amor 160pp
Read in Spanish!
16. The Martian 384pp
Exciting. Gripping. Could not stop reading.
17. Station Eleven 333pp
18. The Sleepwalker's Guide to Dancing 512pp

19. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life 370pp
1.5 stars. This book was quite infuriating. The concept is great; the book begins with a very important argument and evidence for the benefits of eating local food, an idea I certainly support. The first chapter was educational. However, after that nothing new was revealed, it told the story of Barbara Kingsolver and her family's year long experiment in eating only local food. The problem with this is that she writes it as if the only reason everyone doesn't eat local food is because they are too stupid to know better. She doesn't seem to realise that not everyone can live on a farm and dedicate themselves to perfection. She seems convinced that if she just says that it is better everyone will do it. Her sickeningly perfect family's experience is totally unrelatable. I know that growing and cooking your own vegetables is better, but if there is one thing I hate more than cooking, it's gardening. And sorry, but I actually do think that high calorie delicious processed foods are tastier and easier than growing your own salad from scratch. It's such a shame because I love Kingsolver's fiction - she is one of my favourite writers. I hope this doesn't put me off.

20. All the Bright Places 384pp
3 stars. I had high expectations for this book, which were not met. This is a character-driven YA romance/tragedy. But I didn't feel anything for the characters so therefore I found the romance awkward and the tragedy had no effect on me. It's a boy and girl, she's popular, he's on the outside, he's quirky, she's smart, they have problems with the popular kids and their parents. It was all just obvious. It was like the characters had been pulled from a mental health website; 'this is how suicidal people behave' mixed with token YA themes. I actively disliked him and she was incredibly dull. This book has been called Eleanor & Park meets The Fault in Our Stars. I can see how it was trying to be that. But those two books are incredible books. This book was not those books.

Although I loved Divergent, I found the last two books in the series to be really boring.
28. The Mystery of Mercy Close 505pp
Marian Keyes is always great and she just keeps getting better. This book was funny, original and a great read.
29. Big Little Lies 460pp
A really great read - I was surprised by how much I liked it. It was funny without being flippant and tackled really serious topics alongside everyday problems. It was drama without melodrama. The characters were each unique and individual without being caricatures. they were all believable and mostly likable. The plot was paced and structured beautifully, with the whole book building suspense towards the final big ending.

31. The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History 319pp
Definitely worth reading. An interesting overview of the science and history of extinction, focusing on the current human-driven mass extinction
32. Tell the Wolves I'm Home 360pp
moving and enjoyable
33. The Miniaturist 416pp
A really great story - strong character development, moving and realistic relationships, and an engaging magical-realist mystery.
34. Edge of Eternity 1098pp
This really pales in comparison with the first book of the trilogy. The history and politics just weren't as engaging and the characters didn't seem to be as well connected to their times. Their stories and personalities were just pale reflections of their revolutionary grandparents. There was still value in reading this, but it was just far too long.
35. Sharp Objects 272pp
Wow. Chilling, terrifying, exciting, painful, moving. A very well written thriller. And I don't even like thrillers.

It was good mostly. 3.5 or 4 stars for me. Fairly depressing though - lots of terrible things happen and none of the characters are very nice. I've read two of her other books - Room and The Sealed Letter. It was different to both of those. I liked it a lot better than the Sealed Letter but not as much as Room.

5. Bittersweet Chocolate: Read a book where a character goes by different names or has multiple personalities. The Bone Clocks

Meg (megscl) | 501 comments READING UPDATE

42. The Bone Clocks 640pp
Intelligent and well plotted, bone clocks makes the paranormal believable. The story spans decades and countries from Australia to Iraq as it follows the lives and deaths of a one woman - Holly Sykes - and the people who have an impact on her life. Like Cloud Atlas it is ambitious and meaningful, but it is thankfully much easier to read and enjoy than Cloud Atlas.
43. On the Jellicoe Road 290pp
An enjoyable read with a few mysteries to uncover. It started off a bit confusing but somehow it was still fairly obvious what would happen. I found a lot of the teenage characters too heroic and noble to be real, and the total absence of interesting or responsible adult characters was also a bit of a flaw.
44. The Museum of Extraordinary Things 368pp
Dreamy and poetic with a solid historical setting in new york of 1911. My only problem with this book is that the switching from 1st to third person and back and forth in time was unnecessary and a little off putting. Otherwise I loved the story, the setting, and the characters. 4.5 stars
45. She's Come Undone 465pp
Entertaining and easy to read, but too superficial and obvious to be relatable or memorable
46. A Tale for the Time Being 422pp
If Zen Buddhism and Quantum Physics got together to write a beautiful novel, this is what they would come up with. A Hello Kitty lunchbox washes up on the shore of Canada, inside is the diary of a Japanese teenager who muses on the meaning of the Time Being. This novel tackles suicide, the Japanese tsunami, modern information and communication, war, bullying, garbage, and wild animals, and does it all in a light hearted and truthful voice.
