The novel starts off with a girl named Dorothy and her dog Toto. They live with her aunt and uncle in Kansas. We get introduced to the characters and just how life works around that area. Dorothy and Toto's relationship is developed and we learn they are really the only friends each of them have. Soon afterwards, the cyclone comes and our two main characters are trapped and blown away.
After falling asleep, Dorothy and Toto wake to the house being dropped in an unknown land. They meet the Munchkins and the Good Witch of the North who explain that they have killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Once she learns this, Dorothy wishes to get home. She asked the Good Witch how she can get home and learns she needs to go to the Emerald City. In the city lives Oz (the Great Wizard). He is the only one who can help her get home. So she heads on to the Emerald City in order to find him.
Before she heads out, Dorothy puts on the dead witch's silver shoes. Once out on her adventure she meets Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. Dorothy tells them that she is going to go ask Oz to help her home and they both decide they want to ask him for something too. The Scarecrow hopes for a brain and the Tin Woodman hopes for a heart.
