January is named for Janus the dual faced god of the Romans. One face always gazing backward to look at what came before and the lessons that should have been learned, and the other forward to a new beginning, hopefully with the knowledge gained. For many of us throughout the world it's a time of celebrations and joy. A time that we like to believe allows us to reset ourselves, our goals, and our hopes. So in literally one of the darkest months of the year (for those of us in the northern hemisphere anyway) we revel in the hope of newness that January brings. Yet, whether January is your winter or summer, we should always remember the importance of Janus's backward face and learn from our mistakes to move forward to a better future. So it is rather fitting that the 27th was appointed International Day of Holocaust Remembrance, a tragedy we should never forget.
