A fascinating time capsule... I felt awkward sometimes during reading, but it was really interesting. Here my short review.

I watched the film a few weeks back and enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed reading this view of society. I was shocked at the portrayal of John, almost like an imbecile. The author seemed to want to cover so many societal ills - race, single woman, unwed mothers, prostitution... Her look into the microcosm of her building was well done and the characters came to life for me. A similar themed book, which I also enjoyed, is Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont by Elizabeth Taylor.
I didn't get into this one at first, I probably would have DNFed it if the libraries were still open, as it was I carried on and quite liked the second half of the book. I had previously started Dark Quartet: The Story of the Brontës her story based on the life of the Brontes, but I didn't finish it. While I'm glad I have now read The L Shaped Room, I don't think I'll be reading any more of her books.
