What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

This book I believe was published around 2005-2008, as the author came to my elementary school to sign copies. It's completely in rhymes and has a very dark Tim Burton aesthetic. It started with a Z or something, the title was gibberish. It follows a young girl who's about to get her brain replaced by a doctor who was hired by her aunt ( I think) - who adopted her because her parents passed away with something relating to a ship, she had been seeing shadows, etc so her aunt needed to 'fix' her. Turns out the shadows she had been seeing were real and she escapes to a different realm or something along those lines.
