The 2019 TV series is excellent. Much better than the graphic novel, IMHO, although I know that many will regard that as heresy.
I like a lot of things with regards to the HBO show. I mean A LOT.Not everything works, mind you. I've got issues with how they treat Ozymandias in the final episode. But the storyline with Hooded Justice is just SO GOOD that I can overlook that little quibble.
It's clearly written by people who've read the comic, for people who've read the comic. There's so many details only the comic readers would pick up. The squid even makes an appearance. THE SQUID.

However, the series is a sequel to the Comic book, not the movie. The movie went off in it's own direction.
That's what makes the TV Show so strange. It is an unapologetic sequel to the Graphic Novel and assumes you have read it. I don't know of any other show like that.
the TV Show ... is an unapologetic sequel to the Graphic Novel and assumes you have read it.I watched the TV show before I read the book and had no difficulty following it.

Obviously, you can always read or watch something out of order and "understand it" but generally things are better if you experience them in the order it was meant o be read/watched.
The only thing bad about the TV show is that the second half is not as good as the first half. But everything else is pretty great in the show. Especially the atmosphere and the music.
The HBO series is excellent but familiarity of the graphic novel is important to understand the series' context and (often amusing) allusions. I see the two works-- the series and the graphic novel-- as related but also separate. In the graphic novel, I love the way Alan Moore addresses the issue of morality, or moral relativism. I included the book in some of my classes when I was a teacher (before I retired) and students learned quickly that a graphic novel isn't simply a "comic book" but can be just as complex as a traditional novel. It led to some great discussions about morality, right and wrong, good and evil. In today's culture wars, I probably would be told to remove the book from my curriculum.
The series was brilliantly executed, with a superb cast. Like the graphic novel, the series also addresses moral issues as well as the abuse of power. But it is very timely, with its focus on the racism that sadly is still prevalent in America today.
In my opinion, it's unfair to compare the two works. Each has its own unique voice and each can stand on its own.
