Canada is an interesting place. It's a vast place that defies a universal explanation. There exist many different narratives of Canada. No one ever talks about writing The Great Canadian Novel (tm) because Canada there exists no such concept of Canada that can hold long enough for such novel to be written. Canada itself is an idea that is ephemeral, because it is about always striving towards something that is more progressive. And, unfortunately, but it has to be said, that this ideal isn't to be a shining city on a hill. It's not about the shine, or real estate. It's about being a nice neighbourhood of the world.

There are exceptions, Quebec is one of such exceptions. For Quebec is a nation, distinct, the spur, the splinter under the fingernail that is the Canadian constitution. But, firsthand, I have seen that there are still real divisions between the province, from Ontario to British Columbia, from Alberta to Quebec, And to the less discussed places; the Atlantic, Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick to Saskatchewan and Manitoba, dismissed. And Newfoundland, Where I have never, but will go. The idea of a Canadian Narrative is necessairly difficult one since the idea of Canada itself is constantly open for debate.

Our book therefore begins abroad. Many great Canadian authors (and other mediocre Canadians) have sought refuge abroad to get a broader perspective of the country.
Premise of the book is that it's in response to a book written by someone else. So to take back the narrative Barney has written his own book, his own narrative. The first events of the novel novel take place many years prior in Paris and all is filtered through through the lens of time and dementia such that our narrative is no longer reliable. And our narrator is an asshole and isn't even clear with the truth.

While the plot ostensibly revolves around a murder mystery, it's ultimately a metaphor for the truth, and who gets the privilege to define the narrative, and whose set of facts we can use.
