Glyn I must say Tracy Chevalier is adding to my education. This book is mainly about slavery but from a different angle. The main protagonist is an English Quaker girl who finds herself in Ohio, which was an important part of the ‘Underground Railway ‘ for runaway slaves. It’s a dilemma for the Quakers as to how much to get involved , if at all. I thought it was a very interesting discussion around that and I found myself looking things up, as usual. The story of our protagonist and how she adapts to her strange new world is engrossing enough to keep a reader engaged - or me, anyway!
Chevalier has included the subject of Quilts. (She seems to be well into sewing) They are a big part of women’s culture, and, it seems, Quaker culture, so then I had to go and look up the different designs that are highlighted. I often fancied having a go myself !
I found it interesting and engaging
