Open Season is the the first book in a series about Joe Pickett, a Wyoming game warden. It is a mystery thriller. One day, Joe finds the body of a hunter in his wood pile. He knows the man because he has arrested him in the past for poaching. As Joe investigates the man's murder he realizes that this goes beyond the murder of one man. I thought that this was a decent book. The characters were OK and I was interested in the environmental issues that were included. I thought that the answer to the mystery was obvious from the beginning though and didn't find Joe's journey to realize what I figured out long ago interesting enough to overlook it. I was also a bit disappointed that it didn't have the same sense of place that some other mysteries I have read recently have had. The Wyoming wilderness had so much potential that it didn't live up to. Overall, it was a decent book that kept me entertained. I will probably try the second book some day to see if it is a case of a series improving as the author goes.
