Books have an amazing power to transport you away from the world. Whether to an imaginary destination or some place real, we can experience a wide range via the descriptions and emotions invoked by the author. What book destinations have you been to recently? What are your top book destinations?

One day I won't be a broken record about Tolkien, but today is not that day. Tomorrow isn't looking too good either. Middle-Earth is definitely one of my top two book destinations. I would love to wander the Shire, read books in the Rivendell library, camp out under some mallorn trees, ride a horse through Rohan's plains, and view the sunset and moonrise in Henneth Annun. And I would especially love to visit during the Long Peace, when the sun was new and the mighty of the Eldar race still walked Middle-Earth.

My second top book destination will always be Dinotopia. An island cut off from the rest of the world populated by intelligent dinosaurs? Count me in! I don't necessarily even think I'd want to come back. There's a librarian job in Waterfall City calling me (it's amazing to me the number of fictional libraries I've been drawn to before even thinking of pursuing it as a career).

Other book destinations... Narnia, Gotham, Austen's Regency England, and the library of The Starless Sea.

Where will you be going?

Ingrid Hurst (bookrdr) | 285 comments I have always been drawn to books set in New Orleans ever since my first Anne Rice book. I was so excited to see it in person years ago.
Since I like historical fiction, I like England & most places in Europe.
I love a lot of sci fi, but haven’t want to visit those places. Ha ha

Ann (ann-fracturedfiction) | 516 comments My first book destination would be Middle-Earth, of course, my second is a tie between Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. I would love to spend a year or seven wandering around Hogwarts, checking out the library. As for Narnia, I would love to explore all of Narnia, as well as the house they stayed in, you just know the library would be amazing. And of course, it helps that Middle-Earth and Narnia were both filmed in New Zealand, definitely high on my bucket list.

Hahaha. Yeah, most of the places in sci-fi seem pretty hazardous to your health.

New Zealand is also super high on my bucket list. The closest to Middle-Earth we will ever get. :D

Zachary | 47 comments I think my first book destination would be Savannah, GA, in the 1980s with all of the eccentric personalities a la John Berhendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Something about seersucker, spanish moss, and lilting southern accents is appealing. Also, as some of you mentioned, New Zealand makes my bucket list as well.

I've always enjoyed William Shakespeare's writing. I've always wanted to visit London during that period to actually see how those plays were performed at the Globe Theatre. I think medieval or Renaissance Europe would always be an awesome place to visit. I've always enjoyed literature from that period.
