Tally Youngblood and her friend Shay have now become Specials. The Specials are surgically enhanced "cruel" Pretties (think teeth shaved to points) who are the enforcers of the Pretty world - capturing runaways and fighting the Smokies, the rebels who want to destroy the Pretty way of life. Most of this book consists of them following a group of escaped Pretties to find the location of the New Smoke - headquarters for the rebels. And when they do find it -- things don't go as expected.

My opinion: In the first two books I was cheering for Tally Youngblood, our young teen heroine. But I didn't really like her much as a Special - a "cruel" Pretty and an enforcer. And frankly much of this book consisted of big chase and or action scenes with Tally flying on her enhanced hoverboard. I got a little tired of these scenes. The author isn't much for character development. This book was originally intended to be the end of the series, but by the time I got to that ending it all seemed a little bit anticlimactic.

(view spoiler)[One element of the book really rubbed me the wrong way. Tally and Shay were an elite type of Specials called Cutters. They were called Cutters because they used the pain from cutting themselves to clear their minds. This seems to glorify cutting - which is definitely not a good thing. (hide spoiler)]
