I don't get it. I have so many geek guy friends that quote aspects of this book and I don't get what's so great about it. To me it seemed like an unorganized hodge podge of ideas just thrown onto the page.

There was a bit of a plot but overall it all just seemed a bit odd. I'm wondering if part of why I didn't "get it" is it's just not my sense of humor. I have a super ridiculously logic brain and the all overness of this book was just not for me. I enjoyed aspects of it but I'm not a die hard fan.

The reading was easy enough and entertaining. I may read one or two of the next books in the series but it may be like some other series where I just read once a year. I did read it quickly, so who knows, maybe I'll tear through the rest so I can get the poll ballot points ;)

Karin | 9355 comments It's all about what you find funny, and the lack of plot, etc is part of it. It is a lot better on audiobook. Also, the author didn't enjoy writing novels; I can't remember what I read about how he ended up writing them. My favourite in print is the third one, but that has to do with a few things I found really funny, not with the plot. My reactions were varied and I gave one of them 2 stars. I think it also has to do with the fact that it started with a series of radio dramas.

It does help to read them in order, and if you dislike the second one, just read the end so you have an idea where Arthur is at the start of the third at least :).

I have the Ultimate book, so it has the 5 first books all together in order. I'm very OCD so I could never read anything out of order on purpose :)

I understand. I have had to work hard to read books out of order and will only in certain circumstances such as for a reading challenge or when my son gave me a Bernie and Chet mystery for Christmas and I was sure I wasn't going to like it (I did). My daughter brought the Ultimate book home from the library and I read them in order as well. It works better that way, IMO. I hope you like at least one of them better than the first one :)

I also used to have to finish every book I started and didn't learn to let it go if I hated a book until I was in my 40s and had kids underfoot.

I don't know if I'll ever get over that. I do know to avoid magical realism and realism in general. I still finish every book I start though. I'm already in my 40s so it might be my 50s or 60s by the time I finally am able to let go of that quirk :)
