Hi everybody. I think it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves, tell what type of books we usually read and what you like to read in this group.

I'll get the ball rolling. I'm Nicole aka co984life on Twitter and other social media. For the most part I read horror; the past couple years I've gotten into the young adult books that are now on big screen and ventured into fantasy thanks to the Game of Thrones series. So I'd love to read more fantasy and anything else that you guys think is worthwhile.

Rod here. Aka bald headed rod in the Goliverse and @rod_B_johnson on Twitter. I really read a wide variety of books but really enjoy sci fi and fantasy. I wanted to do this group because I used to have a regular book group that helped me discover many new books and authors that I liked. That group faded away and I have missed the suggestions and forays into new books. I feel the Goliverse members have many books to recommend and would really enjoy hearing suggestions.

message 3: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Cooper | 64 comments I'll just jump right in here then. Hey All! It's me, Wendy!

Never been in a book group, so I'm pretty excited to try something new. I enjoy almost any kind of book, because, well, you can't really judge a book by it's cover, can you. So, I'll read just about anything. Mostly I like the sic fi, fantasy stuff. Don't care for horror, cuz I get bad dreams. Don't usually care much for the Chick-flick stuff either, however, I adore Jane Austen, so go figure.

Okay, I'll try not to dominate the conversation. Catch you in the Goliverse or @MadcowMamma on the Twitter!

message 8: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments what else do you need to know...i also mostly don't read horror but i do like zombies/vamps/weres right now i'm on a super hero story kick cause i enjoy the psychology behind it. I have read a few superhero novels not much of a comics reader though.

message 9: by Steve (new)

Steve Glosson | 7 comments Mod
I'm Steve...I realize that I haven't read as much as I should in life...I like audiobooks.

message 10: by Jesse (new)

Jesse | 8 comments Hello, my name is Jesse. I like reading, basically anything I can get my hands on, and writing, basically anything I would like to read that hasn't been written yet. I like all sorts of genres (sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, historical), I've only recently dipped my toes into horror and graphic novels. The Graphic Novels I liked, the graphic Novels I didn't care for so much. I'm also attempting to cultivate a taste for classics, which means I've been reading/listening-to some old books. Basically I like to read.

message 11: by Jeffery (new)

Jeffery Self | 1 comments Hello my name is Jeff. I like fantasy, science fiction, and comic books. I'm @jpself79 on twitter.

message 12: by Nathan (new)

Nathan | 34 comments I'm Nathan. I mostly read fantasy and science fiction, but I also love a good mystery. I'll be up for reading most anything as long as I can find it on audiobook. Unfortunately, I don't have that much time for reading anymore. Fortunately, my hour long commute allows me to listen to audiobooks so I don't have to abandon my love of reading.

message 13: by Mitchell (last edited Jan 12, 2015 05:16AM) (new)

Mitchell Huff | 1 comments Hey everyone, I'm Mitch (of the Lost Hours Podcast and associated vast and burgeoning media empire). I read "Legends" and some of the old classics.

This gon be gud.

message 14: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Beaty | 33 comments Bryan Beaty here - AKA squire trelane on the rare occasions I can get the kids in bed in time to listen live on Mixlr. I read a lot of science fiction but throw in other genres, including some non-fiction from time to time. I also love to get into series to really delve deep into a group of characters.

message 15: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Hello Mitch and Bryan. Welcome. Hope that this an enjoyable group for everyone. I hope anyone that hasn't made a suggestion yet takes the time to do it. I think we will be deciding on a book soon

message 16: by Jess (last edited Jan 13, 2015 12:46PM) (new)

Jess Hello everyone, this is Jess Becker, @jadetiger712 on twitter. I mostly like to read scifi/fantasy books, including young adult books that are in that genre. Sometimes I'll read some nonfiction books. When I was in high school I would read a lot of the classics for class but since then I have fallen off reading them. I guess being forced to read them in school killed me wanting to read them by choice.

Also I like to read comics and graphic novels, staying mostly in the Marvel universe.

message 17: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments hey jess (the right jess this time lol) i agree with the classics comment does mad look at superheros count?

message 18: by Anthony (new)

Anthony | 8 comments Hello everyone! I'm Anthony, also known as Blessed Cheesemaker in the Mixlr chat. I enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction books, but I've also gotten into some historical fiction/mystery series lately (Brother Cadfael and Amelia Peabody to be precise). Recently I've read a little of the now Star Wars Legends and the two new Star Wars novels, but I really started out in my reading with Narnia and Lord of the Rings. I look forward to learning about some new series and reading along with all of you.

message 19: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments Anthony wrote: "Hello everyone! I'm Anthony, also known as Blessed Cheesemaker in the Mixlr chat. I enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction books, but I've also gotten into some historical fiction/mystery series..." have you tried the inspector and mrs jefferies?

message 20: by Anthony (new)

Anthony | 8 comments No I haven't, docxen. I'll have to check it out.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Justin here, AKA Luke Skywalker, Texas Ranger. Havent been live in the chat for awhile now but I listen to all of the podcasts. Really excited about this book club and can not wait to get started :)

message 22: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenlynn97) | 60 comments My name is Jennifer and I have a master's degree in English Literature. Don't let that intimidate you but I also read over 100 books a year while raising two boys and having a grad student husband. I also LOVE to bake! As for books, I will read absolutely any genre except for smut because smut makes me laugh and sort of defeats the purpose. My favorite genre is sci-fi/fantasy but I like ones with a bit of humor.

message 23: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments jennifer i got a feeling (except for when you wish to hurt me for my spelling/grammer) we will be good friends lol love scifi fantasy especially if i can find some that's funny.

message 24: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenlynn97) | 60 comments I am very slack when it comes to proper grammar on social media. Now, if you EMAIL me with poor grammar - we have a problem. :)

message 25: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments i seldom email people so no worries. Have you read any of the discworld?

message 26: by Tim (new)

Tim Talbott | 2 comments I am Tim. I usually read science fiction or fantasy, but I read almost all genres. I am currently reading the "Wild Cards" series that is edited by George R. R. Main. Would like to suggest that does or possibly the "Thieves World" series for the group.

message 27: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenlynn97) | 60 comments Hi, Tim. I read the first book of the Wild Card series, and I liked it but I never had the urge to pick up #2. What do you think?

message 28: by Tim (new)

Tim Talbott | 2 comments I am halfway through book 1. I really like series reading; so I probably will go on. I read through "Thieves World" in high school, but have yet to read the ones that came out later after I read what was available at the time.

message 29: by Matt (new)

Matt | 150 comments Hey, I'm Matt Marks (occasionally on the chat as MatthewMarksLukeAndJohn, and also the reason Bad Impersonations Theater didn't die as a bit on GOL).

I'm a big fan of Tolkien. I've read the Hobbit, LOTR, and the Silmarillion multiple times, as well as bits of Unfinished Tales and The Book of Lost Tales.

I've read some Star Wars Legends. I've been reading the new canon novels as well.

After the Dune episode of GOL, I decided to reread Dune, which I hadn't read in 10 years, and I'll see if I can make it through the series (or at least the Frank Herbert ones).

message 30: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Dune 1 is excellent
2 and 4 are slower and setups.
Really enjoyed 3 5 and 6. Welcome aboard Matt.

message 31: by Matt (new)

Matt | 150 comments Yeah, I read the first two back in high school, and meant to go onto the third. But it wasn't available at my library for the whole summer I wanted to read it. And then time rolled on and I kind of forgot about it. So I'm excited to jump back in. I'm already 3/4 of the way through the first.

message 32: by Keith (new)

Keith Wolters | 5 comments Hello. Keith from Pittsburgh. I read more SF than fantasy. I enjoy a lot of the classic authors like Asimov and Heinlein but have really gotten into The Expanse books by James S.A. Corey and Old Man's War by John Scalzi.

message 33: by Auli'i (new)

Auli'i | 4 comments Hi everyone! I'm Auli'i and I'm in Las Vegas. I'm a voracious reader and I read pretty much everything. I am a huge fan of the classics and of the Bard and do especially enjoy fantasy and science fiction.

message 34: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments cool auli'i your fit right in

message 35: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Cooper | 64 comments Yes, Aulii, you will fit in perfectly, but I already knew that didn't I? Pretty excited to see you here!

message 36: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Wendy do you know Aulii? Does he live in the high desert or the low desert? Do the low and high desert dwellers feud with each other?

message 37: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Cooper | 64 comments Yes, Rod I do know Aulii, and she is a her; from Hawaii. I can't talk about the desert feuds. It's best not to let outsiders know. It draws unwanted attention.

message 38: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
Welcome Aulii, glad to have you in the group.

message 39: by Tadd (new)

Tadd | 8 comments My name is Tadd. I love reading, and Geekdom. I love the Star Wars EU/Legends stuff, History stuff, Classical stuff, and most of all I love Stephen King. I have never been huge into fantasy but I have been growing into it mostly through Tolkien. I love reading and want to be part of this to broaden my horizon.

Nicole (co984life) | 115 comments Mod
Welcome to the group Tad!

message 41: by Michael (new)

Michael | 18 comments Hi, I am Mike. You can find me on Twitter @CowinAcctg. I read sci fi, fantasy, thrillers, comics, historical fiction, biographies, history, and books written during the golden age of exploration (late 1800's - about 1920). "South" by Sir Shackleton is a favorite. I will almost never turn down the chance to read something from the Arthurian legends.

message 42: by John (new)

John Stinebaugh Hello. Im John. I live in NE Colorado where I work as a clinical supervisor at a community mental health center. I love to read professionally and for fun. I love podcasts and comics as well. Orson Scott Card is my favorite author and Ready Player One is my favorite book currently.

message 43: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (whipsnake) Hi, my name is Elisabet and I'm from Norway. I have mostly read fantasy and crime books, but these days I am trying to widen my book horizons. I "signed up" for this book club, "The Sword & Laser" and "Vaginal Fantasy Book Club" so I should have plenty of suggestions. Also I like the podcast/G+ Hangout part of them. I joined here because I heard Steve talk about it on GOL.
I have as my goal to make 2015 the year of reading for me, and it helps that I both read on my Kindle and listen to Audiobooks. Don't know what else to say about me really. I'm @Whipsnake on Twitter and Instagram.

message 44: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments clinical supervisor at a community mental health center..we can use you here john lol j/k, Ellie both of those book clubs are awesome though anything with felicia day is good.

John Reid (reidj) | 11 comments John Reid (aka Pipes)... I'm an Instructional Technology Coach for a K-8 school district in Northern Illinois. That's just been since this year, though, as I had been an English, Journalism, Writing, and History teacher. You'd usually find me reading minimalist and short fiction — Raymond Carver, Amy Hempel, Chuck Palahniuk, Ernest Hemingway, Tobias Wolff — and sci-fi — Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, H.G. Wells, Orson Scott Card, etc.

Back in the day when I was a kid, I loved the scholastic books that adapted Nintendo video games into young adult novels — Master Blaster, Ninja Gaiden, Infiltrator, etc.

message 46: by Docxen (new)

Docxen | 159 comments well howdy john yea i remember those have you tried any of the current video games into books ie halo? they are not bad.

message 47: by John (new)

John Reid (reidj) | 11 comments I haven't lately. I've mostly been reading a bunch of YA stuff (God help me) to help teachers plan their projects. If I never read another dystopian future with teenage saviors ever again, I'll die happy.

The closest thing to some of the video game adaptations I've read in the last few years has been some of the old Aliens series and Ready Player One.

message 48: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
John, we enjoy several of the same authors. Nice to see another Hemingway fan.

message 49: by John (new)

John Reid (reidj) | 11 comments I'll tend to lean toward his short stories most times, but the set of books I'm most proud to own is the collection of Hemingway novels that were my grandfather's.

message 50: by Rodney (new)

Rodney | 208 comments Mod
We must be related somehow. I love his short stories. I have no heirloom books. Lots of book lovers in my family. I'm the only Hemingway fan.
