I nominate The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. "Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author's own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character's art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live."

I have gotten tired of YA books, but I recommend this one. And it's a very quick novel to read.

I'll nominate Post Office by Charles Bukowski. Bukowski worked at the post office; he is a key (and some may say best) LA writer.

Could I nominate Black Boy by Richard Wright? I have had this on my to-read shelf for quite some time. It is an important novel from the perspective of an African American living in the South during a turbulent time.

In an effort to move things along a little more, I'm going to nominate Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit because it is a coming of age story that might be a little challenging. An autobiographical novel about religion and sexuality.
I will nominate Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S Thompson. A novel about a long crazy weekend in Las Vegas that I've thought about reading since I used to live there.

I would like to nominate An Angel at my Table by Janet Frame, if you think it fits the genre. It is the story of Frame's life, well known because of the Jane Campion movie. I would love to read it soon.
