Needed a new callendar and before I could get out of the book store, I added Half Broke Horses and Dead Man's Folly to my bag.
I've heard that, Sandra. Thanks. The cover caught my eye as I was walking down the isle. I went to check on a series book to remind myself if I had read it but they did not have that one volume on the shelf. They had 1-9 and 12-15. I knew I had read #10, but wanted to verify #11.
I had some Christmas money to spend so I went ahead and purchased these books. They should keep me going for a while!Strange Meeting
Wilfred Owen: A New Biography
The Boy I Love
Three Day Road
A Novel Bookstore
The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender
The Silence of Bonaventure Arrow
The Paris Architect
Deathless
The Girl in the Photograph
(pre-ordered)
I picked up a whispersync deal - The Last Town, book 3 in the Wayward Pines trilogy, for $1.99 Kindle and $1.99 Audiobook. I got the first two books on similar deals and was holding out on the last book for a good price. One more for the serial killer to off.
I got some you-can-use-them-almost-anywhere gift vouchers from work for Christmas, and today I spent a few of them on the very small English book section in the local bookstore. I got The Invention of Wings and The Miniaturist

That's why I bought it! I knew both of you rated it 5 stars and I had it on my tbr for a while, so I couldn't just leave it in the shop ;-)And I love the cover, it's beautiful!

I agree, the cover is lovely. Which one do you have?

Peggy wrote: "I have the second, but I love them both :)"That is the one I have too. I like the first one as well though. I recently came across this short video which shows the amount of work that went into designing and making the UK cover. It looks like they put an awful lot into it.

Thanks for the link Lisa, very interesting! I would have never guessed that they actually built a miniature house to make the cover.
Peggy wrote: "Thanks for the link Lisa, very interesting! I would have never guessed that they actually built a miniature house to make the cover."I know! I thought it was all done on a computer. They definitely went all out for this one!
It's worth it I think. I'm sure many people who have never heard of the book and are just browsing get drawn to it by just looking at the cover :)

I will be sure to let you know my thoughts on it Lilisa. Wilfred Owen is my favourite war poet so I am looking forward to finding out about the man behind the poetry :)

Thanks Lisa. Strange Meeting is my favorite Wildred Owen poem.

I like 'Strange Meeting' too. However, my favourite poem by him is 'Dulce Et Decorum Est'. It made such an impact on me when we studied it in school.
Sandra wrote: "Those covers are beautiful. Some covers are just a piece of art. Don't you think?"I completely agree Sandra.
Amazon.ca and Amazon.com have the first 8 books of J.D. Robb's In Death series. I already have books 1-3, so I picked up books 4-8. Then I popped over to Audible and got the whispersync deals at $.99 each.
Was able to get a few trips in to my used bookstores and picked up a couple. Life After Life by Kate Atkinson (hardcover, $1) (This is my second copy)
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes (paperback, $1) (I was SO stoked on this!!! Been wanting it for a whiiile but never could find it used)
Palo Alto by James Franco (paperback, $1)
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey (hardcover, $7)
I treated myself to Innocence and Agatha H and the Airship City. I saw the latter book in my local Forbidden Planet store and clocked that it had been blurbed by Patrick Rothfuss - so I've bought the kindle version. Another series book to add to my challenge!
Starting to list my London finds here:Foyles:
I have visited Foyles a few times before, and their new premises aren't as characteristic as the old bookshop, but the amount of books is still impressive. I concentrated on non-fiction here.
Yes Sister, No Sister: My Life as a Trainee Nurse in 1950s Yorkshire
Invisible Romans: Prostitutes, Outlaws, Slaves, Gladiators, Ordinary Men and Women -- The Romans That History Forgot. Robert C. KnappIn Stitches
Hospital Babylon. Imogen Edwards-Jones & Anonymous
Confessions of a Male Nurse
Paris to the Moon
A Piano In The Pyrenees: The Ups and Downs of an Englishman in the French Mountains
Trust Me, I'm A (Junior) Doctor
Direct Red: A Surgeon's Story
Londoners: The Days and Nights of London Now—As Told by Those Who Love It, Hate It, Live It, Left It, and Long for It
Daunt Books:
I wasn't planning on visiting Daunt, but I happened to stroll past it on Marylebone High Street while looking for something else, so I popped in. Didn't look at their specialty (travel books), only wandered around the front part of the shop. Nice atmosphere, sort of old-fashioned.
The Prophecy of Bees
More London finds:Forbidden Planet:
I just love this shop, I could spend hours there! A must visit for anybody interested in fantasy, science fiction etc.
Snowblind (a paperback of this though, but can't find the exact same copy on GR)
Zombies: More Recent Dead
Red Rising
An English Ghost Story (signed)
Annihilation, Authority and Acceptance (hardcovers, signed)
Oxfam or Cancer Research UK shops:
This was my first time visiting these shops and I made some real finds here. There's one Oxfam shop near British Museum, another one on Marylebone High Street, where there's also a Cancer Research UK shop.
The Hive Construct
Games Creatures Play
A Walk in the Woods
Seoul Survivors
Driving over Lemons: An Optimist in Andalucía
Almost French: A New Life in Paris
Under My Hat: Tales from the Cauldron
Men of the Otherworld
Best New Horror: 25th Anniversary Edition
Wizard and Glass
Altar of Eden
Demon Collector
Stung
Home Improvement: Undead Edition
The Vampire Shrink (LOL, I just couldn't resist the title!)
Are you still in London Camilla? You bought some great books! I love Forbidden Planet too - we have one in Bristol but I'd love to go to one of the London ones as I bet they have loads of stuff! The Oxfam book shops are amazing - the amount of books and CDs I've bought in those are unbelievable. I'd be interested to here what you think on the Southern Reach Trilogy. I read the first one and I have the other two in my series challenge - nice that you got signed copies!
I picked up A Morbid Taste for Bones on an iBooks special of $1.99.Before Christmas, I ordered the boxed set of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. They came today:
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
Oh, I want to read Cloudstreet, no time yet. It is on my Australia list. I have not read any of his books yet.
Cherie wrote: "Oh, I want to read Cloudstreet, no time yet. It is on my Australia list. I have not read any of his books yet."I haven't read any of his books yet either Cherie. I am looking forward to trying one out as I have heard plenty of good things about his writing.
Pragya wrote: "Camilla, how did you manage to bring all those back? Wow, great shopping!"We had two cabin-sized bags with us just for this purpose, LOL! When we returned, I packed them full of not much else than books.

I just bought Traitor's Blade which is the first book in a series (another to add to my challenge). It was only 99p on kindle today.
I just HAD to partake in some retail therapy. Had a difficult couple of hours at work last night and still feeling it this morning so I thought I'd treat myself to a couple books to cheer me up. Here's what I got:King of Thorns
