Book Synopsis:
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear.

Sara's ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation -- a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams -- the first victim's sister -- want to serve her own justice.

But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath... or mean her death.

I am looking forward to this one, it will be my first Karina Slaughter book.

Me, too, Emma! It looks like a nail biter. I haven't read a really good suspense novel in awhile, so I'm excited about this one.

Great to have you along Kristin. I hope I love her books as much as you do. I really want to find a good series that has multiple books in it.

Ooh, I like reading a book series before it gets made into a TV series.

I managed to fit the first couple of chapters in today during my lunch break at work. I think its already got me hooked.

I'm up to Chapter 11. So far the investigation is intense. (view spoiler)[I thing Sarah knows who sent the postcard (just a hunch), but why hasn't she turned it over to the police? Does she think it isn't connected to the murder? Something spooky is going on. (hide spoiler)]

Finished! The material was a lot darker than what I'm used to, but I thought the plot was solid and the writing was fantastic. It was realistic enough to give me chills in places. The author obviously did a lot of medical research to make this work. The police procedures were top notch as well.

(view spoiler)[I knew something must've happened in Sara's past, but it took awhile for me to make the connection. At first, I wish the author had gone into more detail about WHY Sara was targeted, but then again, sick people make sick decisions. It could be something elaborate in the predator's mind, or he could've just picked her at random. No telling. The author did a fabulous job keeping me guessing about the killer. I had three suspects in mind and didn't know the real culprit until he was named. I love it when a mystery can do that. I also teared up in several places. This isn't for the faint of heart. The violence was brutal.

On a side note, I'm pulling for Jeff and Sara's relationship. Cheating is a hot button issue for me, but Jeff is remorseful and it's obvious that he loves Sara. He admitted his mistake and I think they have a chance. I'll read more from this series. (hide spoiler)]

I'm eager to know what everyone else thinks! I couldn't put it down!

I should be able to get through some more of it today. I've enjoyed it so far but am only a few chapters in.

I'll have notifications on as long as their are people reading. It really went fast for me, but then again I'm recovering from knee surgery and have a lot of down time. It's not like I'm scrubbing floors or anything at the moment.

What happened to Sybil is truly awful and I probably wasn't expecting the story to start off with Sara finding get body the way she did. (hide spoiler)].
So far I am really enjoying the book. I really like Jeffrey, he seems like a good police officer. I can't say I have warmed to Lena much at this stage, her grief is creating too much anger which is making it difficult to connect with her, but she does seem like a pretty savvy detective.

Yeah, this was a great first novel for the series, I definitely want to read more. (view spoiler)[ you are right in that it is probably one of the most brutal detective type stories I have read - Some pretty sick stuff was done to the ladies. I too did not know who it was until the author decided she wanted me to know, which is great. There is nothing worse than figuring it out way in advance so that reading the rest of the book is just going through the motions. I think Karina Slaughter was clever in getting the reader to root for the relationship between Sara and Jeffrey as that alone would encourage me to read the next book, let alone how good her actual story was. You're right that her anger is really making it difficult to see her personality. We know a little about her past, but I think she had the anger under control until her sister was murdered. I feel terrible for her though. I wonder what she will do now? It will take a long time to cope with the assault. He was a creepy little so-and-so. (hide spoiler)]

Yep I would definitely be interested in a BR for #2, especially in Feb, I am a bit overbooked for Jan at the moment :)

I've read Blindsighted and Kisscut during Tower Teams. I'm really loving this series, and I agree it can be quite brutal & gruesome. I recommend it bit it's not for the faint of heart.

Becky and Emma, I agree about Jeffrey and Sara. (view spoiler)[I do not like cheating in my books either but with Jeffrey it's different and I caught myself rooting for them. I think it's because Jeffrey does a lot of groveling and he's remorseful. He seems like a good guy. I like him and Sara. Well done by the author! (hide spoiler)]

About Lena: (view spoiler)[I like her on and off but after reading the second book I just can't. She makes it difficult to warm up to her. She has had a lot of difficulties in her past and what happened to her sister and her just fuels her anger even more. I think she's really an intricate character and I'm interested to see how she will turn out.

One of my favourite character in the book is Lena's uncle, Hank Adams. I feel he regrets his past and in his kind of way really loves/protects Lena & Sybil. But Lena just keeps him at a distance and remembering him why Sybil got blind. I feel bad for both of them but that changed after book 2 too. (hide spoiler)]

About Hank: (view spoiler)[I found that I like him, too. He is full of regret and while he was trying, he tends to take the easy road. Nan was willing to be comforted, while Lena's anger and pride wouldn't allow it. He should've pushed harder, but I think he didn't believe he had the right anymore. Interesting dynamic.
