What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I can't remember this book title (or detective's name!): A British detective (I think there is a series with him in it?) is on holiday at a seaside hotel and reads the paper a lot. Maybe the crosswords, too -- I feel like someone leaves him a packet in his hotel room with a crossword in it? He meets a woman (not a romance though). He walks the streets a lot. He sits in the bar/restaurant of the hotel a lot.

Small, short mystery I think from the early 80s or late 70s. Not really a cosy but a precursor.

So in the mood to read this again.....hope someone out there can help!

One of the Inspector George Gently / Chief Superintendent Gently (he gets a promotion) series by Alan Hunter? The second one, Gently By the Shore, is set at the seaside, as is the sixth, Gently in the Sun - there might be more.
