Sonja lives in Copenhagen and is, in her forties, belatedly learning to drive. But her driving instructor won't let Sonja change gear and it seems Sonja is destined to spend her lesson time steering the car, but not driving it, around the city and recalling the past.

I suppose this is what you might call a midlife crisis story and it is funny in places, particularly Jytte, the driving instructor, but it's also rather sad. Sonja gets anxious over a lot of things but it's so true to life, for example, joining a social event under pressure and then having to slide out of it with embarrassed excuses.

I did enjoy Sonja herself and also the descriptions of the countryside where she grew up but I felt that it was quite slow and it didn't really have a proper ending so only three stars from me.
