I don't think we have a thread for when people are asking for recommendations so I thought I would add one.

If you want any particular recommendations ask in here and the rest of the members can chip in.

Okay I'm going to start this off.

One of my students has asked for some recommendations of crime books. She's 17 so YA and Adult recommendations welcome. I don't read a lot of crime so I am at a loss at what to recommend for her.

Jo Elliott | 1840 comments I'm not a massive crime reader, but I can think of a couple that I've enjoyed:
-Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
-Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
-13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough
-The Young Sherlock Holmes series by Andrew Lane (though that one might be a little young, I read it when I was about 14)
-Stalking Jack The Ripper series by Keri Maniscalco

I think that's all I've got, but I hope that's a decent starting point!

I loved the Temperance Brennan series starting with Déjà Dead
Another I've enjoyed that would work Exit Strategy

I used to read so much more in this genre but that was pregoodreads

I used to love the TV show Bones! Never thought about giving the book series a shot though. Maybe I should 🤷‍♀️

They are not a lot alike other than sharing the same name and profession. I love the books though. My absolute favourite is Cross Bones. I will always highly recommend them

The best historical fantasy, especially those taking place in Asia or Egypt. Recs anyone?

message 10: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1014 comments Not necessarily always in Egypt but it heavily involves Egyptian lore would be the Theodosia series starting with Theodosia and the Serpents of Chaos. It's a personal favorite of mine.

Gord | 1014 comments In regards to the Asian side of things there is

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
The Twelve Kingdoms: Sea of Shadow (not necessarily historical but kind of is. This is a Tokyo Pop translation so it might be impossible to find and the translation isn't the greatest)
The Girl with Ghost Eyes (historical fantasy set in china town in San Fransisco. Lots of Chinese lore)
The Devourers (Odd historical fantasy set in India)

Thanks Gord!! As usual the library doesn't have what I want, at least not in ebook or audio, but I will keep my eye out. Devourers sounds right up my alley! And I absolutely want to read Girl with the Ghost Eyes.

message 13: by Gord (new)

Gord | 1014 comments I remember reading Devourers a few years back while attending the local anime convention and it was this weird trippy read. Probably not the best thing to be reading at a con with millions of distractions. I don't think I've recommended it before because it's just so hard to explain.

As for Girl with the Ghost Eyes I just love that series and I really hope we get more in the future.

Elena Granger | 1791 comments Hey guys! I know some of you have kids and maybe read books with them. I need a strange recommendation this time. A fantasy book which both adult and 13-yo kid could enjoy and read together.

message 20: by Marlow (new)

Marlow (waywardsprong) Maybe try one of Rick Riordan's books, the Magisterium Series, or maybe the Keeper of the Lost Cities series!

Brittany | 6492 comments Mod
Rick Riordan's books would be my first rec too. Beyond that it really depends on the kid, what they enjoy and what their reading and maturity levels are at. At that age a lot of Young Adult books work

message 22: by Elena (new)

Elena Granger | 1791 comments The Keeper of the Lost Cities worked great! Thank you :D

Oooh yes, definitely Rick Riordan. And also check out the Rick Riordan Presents imprint! I've only read Sal and Gabi Break the Universe (Sal and Gabi, #1) by Carlos Hernandez but I really enjoyed it. I have Paola Santiago and the River of Tears (Paola Santiago #1) by Tehlor Kay Mejia as well, which I am very excited to read. The imprint has a lot of books with different mythologies/cultures and POC authors, which I really like. Another one I enjoyed was Beanstalker and Other Hilarious Scarytales by Kiersten White . It was really funny and I enjoyed the way Kiersten incorporated fairy tales and nursery rhymes to form one cohesive story.

Elena Granger | 1791 comments Thank you for all of your recs! Actually it was a request from my friend. But now I think I might enjoy those books too.

message 25: by Marlow (new)

Marlow (waywardsprong) i haven’t actually read it yet but my friend read a webtoon called suitor armor and really liked it!

Everyone thinks that he's insane. Everyone says that she's weird. Together, they'll show everyone a love and a power that's greater than anyone ever imagined.
