Rachel | 3 comments I know I'm late reading this. I bought it when it came out and started to read it but the first few chapters with Turk were so confronting I put it down and just picked it up again

It could have been written yesterday! A tough read but oh so worth it

Love to know your thoughts

Amanda (amandacham) | 2 comments I gave this book to friends and family members because I felt like it expressed ideas about my own life that I couldn’t explain.

She brought to life what it is like to have to think about your race all day.

Nikki | 1 comments This is a great book. I struggled to get into it at first like you say, Turks side of things made it a tough read.
I am so glad I persisted though. Such an incredible storyline

Kasi | 1 comments Wow! I am impressed that at such a young age you are reading these stories!

I think that Jodi writes about ethical dilemmas and she involves lots of twists that can break our hearts and feel a lot of pain - which you have clearly already experienced. As a high school teacher, I think that as long as you are enjoying what you are reading (even if it feels emotionally difficult), as long as it does not bring you any sort of emotional pain or discomfort, then you continue to read. It's understandable that you would be uncomfortable with the Marin's truth and her story - even adults can be uncomfortable with this.

Edit: My apologies, I see how TheBrightSide's post is related to the thread now. I think that Small Great Things is a phenomenal read that really challenges how we understand race and ethnicity. It also really challenges how we understand our own racism and biases. It will definitely challenge you. If you are feeling uncomfortable with learning about Black Lives Matter and listening to the news/social media over the last few months, then Small Great Things might not be for you yet.
